Vire extends run at the top in National 2

Regional clubs in the former Lower Normandy region faced a difficult weekend in National 2, highlighted by Vire maintaining its position at the top of Poule C while neighboring sides stumbled across the groups.

Vire continued its strong start to the National 2 season by securing a fourth victory in five matches. Trailing 1-0 against Vitré on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, the Théault brothers’ side overturned the deficit to claim a 2-1 win. The result keeps Vire level on points with Cesson at the summit of Poule C. In a fortnight, the club will travel to face the reserve team of Stade Malherbe, which currently sits fifth in the standings.

Caen Reserve Falls Hard at Cesson

The reserve team of the SM Caen suffered a defeat, falling 3-0 away to Cesson. Grégory Auger’s squad missed the services of Mathis Daffot, the team’s leading scorer in National 2, who was retained by the professional squad for a Ligue 3 fixture on Thursday night. The loss exposed defensive vulnerabilities for the SM Caen, which has conceded eight goals across three matches.

Alençon Slips Into Fourth Straight Defeat

US Alençon’s difficult run continued in Poule B with a 4-2 defeat against the reserve side of Stade lavallois. Entering the match level with the Stade lavallois as joint second-to-last, Vincent Laigneau’s players equalized twice before conceding control after the break. Combined with a cup exit against Fécamp in the fifth round of the Coupe de France, the US Alençon has now dropped four consecutive matches.

Late Drama Denies Saint-Lô and Deauville

Elsewhere in Poule C, Saint-Lô appeared to secure a draw against TA Rennes despite playing a man down following Lembo’s 78th-minute red card. However, the closing moments proved fatal. Meanwhile, Trouville Deauville Villers settled for a 2-2 draw after narrowly missing out on a victory against northern side Saint-Amand.
