VfL Bochum fans face an official ban on synchronized jumping and chanting on the Osttribüne of the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, following structural assessments ordered by local authorities ahead of a planned two-year stadium renovation.
Ordnungsverfügung Issued by Bochum Building Authority
The city of Bochum’s building authority issued an official administrative order prohibiting choreographed jumping and bouncing across the entire Osttribüne, according to an announcement published by VfL Bochum on Wednesday. The 2. Bundesliga club reported that the measure serves as an alternative to a full stand closure after static investigations revealed that rhythmic spectator movements generate vibrations capable of inducing physical discomfort among individuals in the crowd.
For decades, supporters on the 10,000-capacity East Stand have sung and bounced in unison to chants such as “Wer nicht hüpft, der ist ein Schalker” during home fixtures. While the structure’s overall load-bearing capacity remains certified, the club explained that synchronized mass movement creates a distinct “trampoline effect.” This mechanical resonance triggers what officials classified as an “unwell effect” for specific spectators within the section.
Strict Enforcement at Upcoming Home Matches
VfL Bochum confirmed that the Osttribüne will remain fully open for the upcoming home fixture against Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday. However, club management must actively monitor and enforce the new directive. The club stated that while traditional goal celebrations involving spontaneous movement are permitted, “community, synchronized, rhythmic jumping and leaping movements are strictly prohibited.”

Club officials stated that failure to comply with the order could result in severe consequences, including the complete closure of the Osttribüne, which would bar up to 10,000 supporters from attending matches live. Management expressed confidence that the fanbase will adhere to the restrictions during the transition period.
Stadium Renovations May End Jumping Ban by 2028
The temporary jumping ban is directly tied to modernization and repair work slated for the aging stadium infrastructure. According to club projections, the renovation of the Osttribüne is scheduled for completion by 2028. VfL Bochum indicated that once structural adjustments and modernization measures conclude, the administrative jumping restriction could be lifted.
