Stūriška Breaks Through to Semifinals in Chunli

The UCI BMX World Cup series moved to China for the eighth round of competition at the Chunli track, where Veronika Monika Stūriška delivered the top performance among Latvian competitors. Racing in the women’s elite category, Stūriška opened her day with a fourth-place finish in her initial heat, which advanced her directly to the quarterfinals.

While she could not overtake the competitor, her finish secured her first-ever elite semifinal berth. In the semifinal heat from gate seven, Stūriška settled into seventh place after the first turn and maintained that position across the finish line to claim 14th overall, marking her strongest result at the elite level.

Kristers Apels Fends Off Dense Fields in Men’s Elite Competition

In the men’s elite division, Kristers Apels led the Latvian contingent by securing 21st place overall. Coached by Edžus Treimanis and representing „RRS/BMX Rīga”, Apels started his Sunday program with a third-place finish in his opening heat behind Dutch rider Džeisons Nūrdmans and French rider Silvēns Andrē.

During the eighth-final round, Apels maneuvered through the inside line after a careful start to climb into third and eventually second position, holding that spot to the finish line. In the quarterfinal, he started from gate three and fought through a dense group of riders, overtaking Australian Maikls Biass down the final straight to finish sixth in the heat and 21st overall. Swiss rider Sedriks Butī won the men’s elite final.

Contrast With Day One Challenges in Chunli

The eighth round followed a difficult seventh round at the same Chunli venue on Saturday, where high winds and a demanding, technical track created heavy attrition for the Latvian team. During the seventh round, Apels crashed in the quarterfinal after Belgian rider Rubens Gommers fell directly in front of him, leaving the Latvian with no room to avoid contact and resulting in a 24th-place finish.
