Serbia head coach Veljko Paunovic voiced sharp criticism of the officiating following his side’s 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, fcupdate.nl reported. Despite seeing his team create numerous opportunities and recover quickly from an early Dutch opener, Paunovic argued that referee Donatas Rumsas applied inconsistent standards and handed an unnecessary advantage to the hosts.
Paunovic Claims Double Standards After Eindhoven Defeat
The visiting manager expressed deep frustration with the Lithuanian referee’s decisions throughout the fixture. While Paunovic praised his players for a resilient performance that kept them competitive against a top-tier opponent, he maintained that the officiating skewed the contest. “We have ultimately been able to play such a match against a top country, which today also received help from the referee,” Paunovic said after the final whistle. “I am not satisfied with the refereeing at all. A national team like the Netherlands does not need help.” Paunovic also highlighted a major opportunity for Mihajlo Cvetkovic shortly after halftime that could have put Serbia up 1-2, adding that the ratio between chances and goals was unequal and perhaps should have been different. Tadic himself felt that Serbia deserved more against Oranje.

Serbian Press Highlights Tadic’s Influence and Missed Chances
Serbian and Dutch sports outlets highlighted contrasting views of a match where the visitors arguably deserved a result. Mozzart Sport highlighted his pass to Cvetkovic during the chance in the 26th minute, the buildup to Terzic’s assist for the goal, and a brilliant pass to Pavlovic near the end of the first half, while Sportinjo Informer observed that once Tadic was substituted in the 66th minute, the Serbian attack lost its primary spark, leading directly to the decisive Dutch goal just six minutes later. Sportklub added that Tadic was the driving force who distributed the play and contributed to the opening goal before fatigue forced him off. At the start of the second half, Anderlecht player Mihailo Cvetkovic turned past Teun Koopmeiners, and a phenomenal save on a shot by Nemanja Gudelj in the 92nd minute prevented a point for Serbia.
Serbia Seeks Results After Matches Against Netherlands
The campaign forms part of the broader tournament schedule where Oranje and Serbia compete alongside Germany and Greece. Serbia will look to translate the competitive spells shown during their matches against the Netherlands into tangible results when the group stage resumes.
