Florida Panthers defenseman Uvis Balinskis recorded 12 minutes and 52 seconds of ice time, three hits, and seven penalty minutes during a 4–3 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
Balinskis drops gloves in season debut
The Panthers opened their second game of the new NHL season in San Jose, where Balinskis made his first appearance of the year. Gustav Forsling was unable to take to the ice despite the previous day being free. During the contest, the Latvian blueliner dropped the gloves with San Jose forward Collin Graf following a physical sequence in the second period. Balinskis delivered a shoulder-to-shoulder check to Sharks prospect Ivar Stenberg, prompting Graf to step in. The altercation resulted in a five-minute fighting major and a two-minute roughing minor for Balinskis, while Graf received a five-minute major for fighting.
Throughout his 12 minutes and 52 seconds on the ice, Balinskis registered one shot on goal, one blocked shot, and three hits, finishing the night with an even plus-minus rating. Fellow Latvian forward Sandis Vilmanis also featured for Florida, logging 12 minutes and 19 seconds of ice time across 17 shifts. Vilmanis recorded two shots on goal—with other box scores noting three—alongside four hits and a neutral rating while skating through a tight contest that saw the Panthers battle back from an early deficit. Vilmanis was on the ice when Florida conceded the opening goal of the game, and also had good scoring chances that went unfulfilled.

Sharks strike early before Panthers rally
San Jose established control early when Mason Marchment scored his first goal for the Sharks, beating goaltender Akira Schmid with a wrist shot from the blue line in the opening period. In the first period, the Sharks recorded 11 shots on goal while the Panthers responded with six. Eetu Luostarinen netted two goals for the Panthers, while Matthew Tkachuk added another, with Tkachuk’s equalizer in the third period assisted by Sam Bennett and aided by net-front positioning from Vilmanis. At the end of the second period, the Panthers managed to cut the deficit to 1–3, and in the sixth minute of the third period, Florida erased the two-goal deficit within a span of 17 seconds.
The comeback effort came at a cost for the visitors. Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov exited the game during the second period after catching his left skate awkwardly near the boards and limping down the tunnel. Barkov missed the entirety of the previous season due to injury, adding immediate concern to the forward group.
Overtime decides the contest
Despite killing a late penalty taken with less than 18 seconds remaining in regulation, Florida could not complete the sweep in the extra session. San Jose secured the extra point four minutes into overtime when Luca Cagnoni scored the game-winner following setups from Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini. Smith had earlier tallied twice in regulation for the Sharks.
The Panthers will look to rebound when they continue their road trip against the Anaheim Ducks.
