For the National School Sports Day, Usep associations in Lioujas and Gages introduced roughly 50 schoolchildren to pickleball while signing a departmental partnership charter uniting the French National Education system, Usep, and the Aveyron sports movement, local reporting shows.
The Lioujas Gymnasium Launch Event
The gymnasium in Lioujas echoed with the sound of hollow plastic balls and children participating voluntarily during the nationwide observance. Coaches and players from the Lioujas-Gages tennis club, led by club president David Marragou, supervised the youngsters as they tested out the fast-growing racquet sport. Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, utilizing a lightweight solid paddle and a perforated ball that travels slower than a standard tennis ball. Because the court matches badminton dimensions with a lowered net, facilities can fit up to four playing areas onto a single traditional tennis court.
Signatories of the Aveyron Departmental Charter
Alongside the student clinics, local officials formalized a departmental framework governing sports partnerships between educational authorities and regional athletic bodies. Attendees at the signing included Mme Faurie-Herbert, academic inspector and director of education services for Aveyron; Guillaume Angles, inspector for the Aveyron 2 district; and Evelyne Douls, president of the departmental Olympic and sports committee, accompanied by development agent Aline Prouzet. Additional signatories and participants featured Charles Barroso, vice-president of the Usep departmental committee; Laura Pleinecassagne, and Jérôme Czaplicki, the newly appointed Usep departmental delegate; and Ghislaine Lacombe, vice-president of the departmental tennis committee. The resulting text establishes formal guidelines for collaborative actions linking sports committees, school sports associations, and educational institutions across the department.

Expanding School Sports Pathways
Organizers structured the pickleball sessions to spark children’s interest in ongoing extracurricular activities offered by Usep school sports associations in Lioujas and Gages. The French Tennis Federation and its departmental committee actively support the expansion of the sport, citing its accessibility and ease of play for beginners of all ages.
