UEFA has appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate an alleged spitting incident involving an Israeli player and an Irish official during a tense UEFA Nations League match in Serbia, according to official reports confirmed by European football’s governing body and detailed by Sky Sport Austria.
The fixture in Group B3 took place on Sunday under high security at a neutral venue in Bačka Topola, Serbia, without spectators in attendance. During the interval, an altercation in or around the player tunnel prompted official match reports to flag the episode for disciplinary review.
“I am not going to comment on that. That is probably something the disciplinary committee will look at,” Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson said during his post-match press conference.
UEFA Disciplinary Inspector Assigned to Tunnel Altercation
The investigation centers on a reported confrontation between an unnamed Israeli player and a member of the Irish delegation during the halftime interval. European football’s governing body confirmed that an inspector has been dispatched to gather evidence and review official testimonies regarding the tunnel incident.
Matches between the two national teams carry heavy political friction due to widespread public opposition in Ireland against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Ahead of the fixture, Irish supporters and domestic groups urged the national team to boycott the matches entirely rather than fulfill the fixture commitments.

Neutral Venue Staging and Pre-Match Protests in Serbia
Security concerns forced the match away from Dublin, landing the fixture in the Serbian town of Bačka Topola behind closed doors. The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw.
Before kickoff, the Irish squad demonstrated clear silent protests against the context of the match. Players declined to participate in pre-match handshakes or conventional team greetings and lowered their heads during the playing of the Israeli national anthem.
Ireland and Israel Face Austria in Final Fixtures
Both teams remain active contenders in League B Group 3 alongside group leaders Austria. The disciplinary proceedings unfold as both squads prepare for their final round of autumn group fixtures.
Republic of Ireland is scheduled to travel to Linz to face Austria on November 14. Three days later, on November 17, Austria will travel to Debrecen to conclude their group schedule against Israel.
