UEFA fines Serbia 50,000 euros over supporters’ racist behavior

The Serbian Football Association has been hit with a total of 50,000 euros in fines and ordered to play its next home match behind closed doors following racist and discriminatory behavior by supporters during UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and the Netherlands, UEFA announced on Friday.

UEFA Disciplinary Penalties Against the Serbian Football Association

European football’s governing body imposed the sanctions following a series of disciplinary infractions during Serbia’s fixtures last month, which both ended in 2-1 defeats. Alongside the 50,000-euro main fine and the stadium closure for the next home fixture, the UEFA disciplinary body levied additional financial penalties against the Serbian federation.

Those add-ons include 22,500 euros for inappropriate messages displayed at a sports event, 2,000 euros for the use of pyrotechnics, and 15,000 euros for a pitch invasion across the two matches. Following the 2-1 defeat away to the Netherlands on October 4, the Serbian federation received a separate 20,000-euro fine paired with a suspended two-year ban on selling away tickets to its supporters, driven by further racist and discriminatory incidents. An additional 20,000-euro fine was attached to that fixture for inappropriate messaging.

Sanctions Issued to Kosovo and Croatia

UEFA also penalized the football federations of Kosovo and Croatia following fixtures in the same competition window last month. Kosovo was fined 35,000 euros in the wake of a 3-1 defeat against Austria. That penalty comprises 15,000 euros for an inappropriate message displayed during the match and 20,000 euros for racist and discriminatory behavior by supporters, accompanied by a two-year suspended ban on selling away tickets.

Meanwhile, Croatia received a 20,000-euro fine after a 4-1 loss against world champions Spain. The Croatian federation faces a suspended two-year ban on selling tickets to supporters for away matches, mirroring the conditional restrictions placed on neighboring federations.
