Mitrofanov Cites Narrowing UEFA Positions on Russian Football Return
Positions within the Union of European Football Associations have shifted closer regarding the potential reintegration of Russian teams into international competitions, according to Russian Football Union General Secretary Maxim Mitrofanov.
Speaking in the sidelines of the “Russia – A Sporting Power” forum in Krasnoyarsk, which runs from October 21 to October 23, Mitrofanov outlined ongoing discussions concerning the total ban on Russian clubs and national sides enacted by FIFA and UEFA in March 2022. Representatives from all 55 national member associations of UEFA met in Berlin on October 8 to review the status of European football.
Ongoing Status and Official Friendlies
While official bans remain in effect for competitive international tournaments, Russian national squads continue to participate in official friendly matches sanctioned directly by FIFA and UEFA. Mitrofanov noted that these fixtures operate outside a neutral status framework, allowing teams to compete under the Russian flag with the national anthem performed and points awarded toward the official international rankings.
Negotiations regarding a full return to tournament play remain complex and ongoing, though Mitrofanov indicated that the recent gathering in Berlin demonstrated a shared recognition among national federation leaders that boycotts and blanket bans run counter to fundamental sporting and Olympic principles.
Global Football Influence and Youth Competition Debuts
Addressing why football has faced a more prolonged exclusion compared to other sports, Mitrofanov pointed to the immense global scale of the sport.
As a concrete step toward international reintegration, the Russian under-15 national team is scheduled to compete in the tournament and festival of FIFA, which takes place from October 22 to October 30 in Baku. The experimental 8-a-side tournament features participants from 191 FIFA-affiliated federations.
Broadcasting Rights Extended Through 2030
In a parallel development announced at the Krasnoyarsk forum, the Russian Football Union and Match TV signed a cooperation memorandum extending their broadcasting partnership for the FONBET Russian Cup through the summer of 2030.

Russian Football Union General Secretary Maxim Mitrofanov and Match TV General Producer Alexander Tashchin finalized the agreement to continue coverage of the tournament, which has expanded into regional markets.
