Toni Kroos informs Spanish Federation of coaching course interest

Two years after ending his playing career, Toni Kroos has informed the Spanish Football Federation of his interest in participating in the coaching course session for the 2027–2028 season.

Toni Kroos Applies for Elite Spanish Coaching Course

Former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos is planning his transition into professional coaching. According to sports daily AS, the 36-year-old German playmaker has informed the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) of his intention to secure a spot in the upcoming 2027–2028 training cycle reserved for former professional footballers.

The coaching seminar is heavily restricted, accepting only twenty candidates per year through a competitive selection process. Successful completion of the program and its examinations grants graduates the official credentials required to manage football clubs at any professional level in Spain, including La Liga.

Existing Qualifications and Step-by-Step Transition Plans

Reporting from L’Équipe notes that Kroos already holds lower-tier coaching certifications that permit him to manage clubs up to the third division of Spanish football. Rather than jumping straight into a senior bench role, the retired German international intends to progress methodically through the licensing structure.

Kroos retired from professional football at the conclusion of the 2023–2024 season following a glittering ten-year spell at the Santiago Bernabéu. During his decade with Real Madrid, he made 465 appearances, scored 28 goals, and collected 33 total team trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles. He also earned 114 caps for the Germany national team, scoring 17 goals before stepping away from international duty in 2021 and club football in 2024.

Maintaining Close Ties With Real Madrid Leadership

Having chosen to remain a resident of Spain following his retirement, Kroos maintains a close relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez.

Kroos has also established a youth academy bearing his name in the suburbs of Madrid, keeping him active within the local football ecosystem.

Kroos Pursues Elite Professional Coaching Certification by 2028

The RFEF’s elite professional coaching program represents the highest tier of managerial education offered by Spanish football authorities.

The scheduled 2027–2028 intake aligns with Kroos’s deliberate timeline for re-entering the professional game. Having already cleared the preliminary educational hurdles necessary for lower-division management, the former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid star is positioning himself to step directly into senior professional dugouts once the RFEF certifies his advanced credentials.
