During a nine-year Major League Baseball career, Benzinger spent three seasons with the Reds from 1989 through 1991. The organization noted in its Thursday release that his contribution to the 1990 championship run remains etched in club history. “Benzinger will be remembered by everyone with a lot of affection and gratitude for the role he played in one of the most memorable chapters in the history of the Reds,” the team stated.

The team highlighted his participation in community outreach events, including the Reds Caravan, the Reds Fantasy Camp, the Reds Legends Remember program, and Redsfest.

A Career Across Five Major League Franchises

Benzinger entered the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox in 1987 before joining Cincinnati. Following his tenure with the Reds, he played for the Kansas City Royals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the San Francisco Giants, wrapping up his big-league playing career in 1995.

After hanging up his spikes as a player, Benzinger transitioned into coaching and player development. He managed the Class-A Dayton Dragons during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He later remained involved in the sport at the grassroots level, coaching youth and junior baseball in New Richmond, Ohio, where he had previously attended high school.
