Tierra del Fuego’s provincial sports delegation departed for Chile on Friday, carrying 220 athletes, coaches, and staff members toward the Región de Los Ríos for the XXXIII Juegos Binacionales de la Araucanía. The contingent travels by land to compete in one of Patagonia’s premier youth sports competitions, running from October 25 to October 31.
Journey across the border to Valdivia
The delegation’s overland transit brings the provincial squad to Valdivia, which serves as the principal host city for this year’s binational tournament. Additional events will unfold across nearby Chilean localities, including Futrono, Panguipulli, Río Bueno, and La Unión. The games bring together youth competitors from six Argentine provinces—Tierra del Fuego, Santa Cruz, Chubut, Río Negro, Neuquén, and La Pampa—alongside seven Chilean regions spanning Ñuble, Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos, Aysén, and Magallanes.
Eight disciplines on the provincial schedule
Provincial athletes will contest eight distinct sports during the week-long program. The lineup features athletics, basketball, cycling, football, judo, swimming, volleyball, and table tennis. Table tennis enters the official event schedule for the first time in the tournament’s history, expanding the multi-sport opportunities for the traveling teenagers.
Official send-off across three cities
Prior to Friday’s departure, the provincial government hosted official presentation ceremonies across Tierra del Fuego’s major urban centers. Gatherings took place Wednesday in Ushuaia, followed by Thursday events in Río Grande and Tolhuin. Organized through the Secretariat of Sports under the Ministry of Citizen Welfare and Justice, these meetings allowed officials to distribute official competition uniforms and give teams a final send-off before the cross-border transit.
Development goals for Patagónian youth
Representatives from the Secretariat of Sports emphasized the broader mission of supporting young Fueguian athletes beyond pure competition, highlighting the role of the games in fostering regional integration and personal growth. With competitors representing Ushuaia, Tolhuin, and Río Grande, the provincial roster enters the Patagonian showcase carrying the sporting hopes of the island province.
