Entering a New Leadership Role
In a team blog post detailing her appointment, Tanabe outlined her background with the sport and her determination as she takes on leadership responsibilities.
The selection places Tanabe alongside senior leadership tasked with guiding the roster through upcoming university leagues.
Tanabe Seeks Collegiate Program Centered on Collective Goals
Tanabe began playing tennis in the first grade of elementary school, influenced by her father and older brother. After temporarily stepping away from the sport in second grade due to slow progress, she returned following guidance from a mentor who supported her through early difficulties with self-expression.
Her perspective on the sport shifted during high school when she experienced team-based competition for the first time. Realizing that support from teammates provided momentum during matches, she sought out a collegiate program centered on collective goals.
Overcoming Setbacks in Collegiate Competition
However, a straight-sets defeat in her opening singles match of the university league brought an abrupt reality check.
Senior members supported her through the post-match disappointment, telling her that first-year players should play freely while upperclassmen carried the competitive load. That response shaped her view of team culture and inspired her current leadership approach.
Targets for the 69th Generation
Although the squad fell short of advancing to the promotion playoffs against first-division programs, the results marked a competitive step forward for the program.
Acknowledging her tendency to avoid setting large public targets out of caution, Tanabe stated her clear objective for the upcoming season: capturing the second-division title and earning promotion to the first division.
