The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured their first victory of the NFL season on Thursday night, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 24-16. The win moves Tampa Bay to a 1-4 record, while the Dallas Cowboys fall to 2-3 following the home loss.
Jalon Daniels Leads Buccaneers Offense
Making his second start, undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels guided the Buccaneers to their first win of the season. Stepping in for Baker Mayfield, Daniels completed 19 of 25 pass attempts for 189 yards and one touchdown. The Buccaneers’ offense totaled 419 yards on the evening, with the ground game providing a significant boost by accounting for 241 of those yards.
Running back Bucky Irving served as the focal point of the Tampa Bay attack. Irving recorded 165 rushing yards on 21 carries, including one rushing touchdown. He also contributed as a receiver, catching two passes for 10 yards and adding a second touchdown through the air.

Third Quarter Surge Defines the Result
The game remained competitive through the first half, with Dallas holding a 10-7 lead at the break. The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter, which Tampa Bay dominated with 17 unanswered points. This 17-0 stretch provided the Buccaneers with a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Cowboys Rally Fails in Final Minutes
Dallas attempted a late comeback when trailing by eight points with 8:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles elected to go for the first down on a fourth-and-goal situation at the one-yard line, but the Cowboys’ defense, led by Jaishawn Barham, stopped Sean Tucker for no gain to force a turnover on downs.
Following the stop, the Cowboys mounted a 99-yard scoring drive over ten plays, capped by an 18-yard touchdown reception from George Pickens to narrow the deficit to 24-16. A subsequent two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Cowboys trailing by eight. Dallas regained possession and advanced to the Buccaneers’ 24-yard line in the final two minutes, but the drive ended when a pass from Dak Prescott deflected off the hands of tight end Jake Ferguson and was intercepted by Alex Anzalone with 1:16 left on the clock.
Cowboys Face Packers After Injuries to Lamb and Guyton
During the fourth quarter, the Cowboys lost CeeDee Lamb to a hamstring injury and left tackle Tyler Guyton to a back injury. Dak Prescott concluded the game with 316 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions on 24-of-42 passing. George Pickens led all receivers with nine catches for 130 yards.

The Dallas Cowboys are scheduled to return to the field on October 18 following a short rest period, when they face the Green Bay Packers.
