SYNTAINICS MBC travels to the Fitness First Würzburg Baskets this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. local time for a Netto BBL Cup round-of-16 clash, entering the notoriously difficult Würzburg arena on a three-game win streak. Head coach Vladimir Jovanovic’s squad arrives with a full roster available for selection, bringing contrasting European momentum into the Maindreieck venue as the third fixture of a demanding nine-game stretch across 30 days.
Würzburg Awaits in the Turnhölle After Midweek European Struggles
Sunday’s matchup places the visiting Wölfe inside the hostile confines of the Würzburg arena, where the home side historically creates an intense atmosphere. Würzburg enters the fixture following a 90-73 road defeat against Iraklis Saloniki in the FIBA Europe Cup on Wednesday. That result marked the team’s second loss in European competition and their third straight defeat on the road, following a 73-65 setback against Petrolina AEK Larnaka in Cyprus and a heavy 101-62 league defeat to Rostock last weekend. Sasa Filipovksi’s side skipped the opening round of the cup as a playoff quarterfinalist from the previous Bundesliga season.
By contrast, SYNTAINICS MBC secured a comfortable 106-84 home victory over the Bristol Flyers on Tuesday to open their ENBL campaign in strong form. Five weeks prior, the Weißenfels club navigated the opening cup round with a convincing 113-83 triumph against ProA side BG Göttingen. In the easyCredit BBL standings, both opponents sit side by side: the Wölfe hold ninth place with 6:4 points, while the Fitness First Baskets trail directly behind with 4:4 points.
Collin Welp Returns to Former Home Court Amid Past Cup History
For forward Collin Welp, Sunday’s contest brings a reunion with his former club. Welp represented Würzburg from 2022 to 2024 before switching sides. He joins teammates Kris Clyburn and Kostja Mushidi as veterans of past battles against the Baskets, including a memorable league encounter at the same venue during the 2022-23 season. In that 3rd-matchday fixture, the Wölfe outlasted the hosts 117-113 after double overtime, with Welp featuring on the opposite roster that night.
Recent cup history favors the hosts in this specific pairing. Five years ago, the two clubs collided at the same stage of the tournament, with Würzburg claiming a 97-78 victory. The last time the Wölfe secured an away win inside the Würzburg arena dates back four years to that double-overtime thriller. Dyn will broadcast Sunday’s encounter live from the tectake ARENA.
Statistical Leaders Shape the Baskets Roster
Würzburg relies on a balanced scoring attack led by four players averaging double figures in domestic play. Eddie Colbert paces the team with 14.3 points per contest and anchors the glass as the squad’s leading rebounder at 7.0 boards per game. Brandon Tischler contributes 11.0 points nightly, Sam Griffin adds 10.5, and playmaker Calvin Wishart chips in 10.0 points alongside a team-high 4.0 assists following his return from ProA club Koblenz.
Both organizations share an identical recent footnote involving Manchester Basketball. The English side eliminated SYNTAINICS MBC 89-86 in the ENBL Final Four semifinals in Weißenfels last April before edging Würzburg 74-73 in Champions League qualifying in mid-September to derail both clubs’ continental ambitions.
