The Swedish men’s national handball team will play Austria at Husqvarna Garden in Jönköping as part of their preparations for the upcoming World Men’s Handball Championship in Germany, local reports said.
The fixture on Swedish soil serves as a final tune-up for the squad before the international tournament begins in January. National team head coach Michael Apelgren pointed to the choice of venue and opponent as vital components for getting the final pieces into place ahead of the championship.
Training Matches in Jönköping
“Austria is a good opponent for us at this stage, and these two matches will be important to get the final pieces in place before the World Championship,” Michael Apelgren said, according to reports. “Moreover, it means a lot to both live and play on home turf before a championship.”

The matchup in Jönköping is scheduled to coincide with the annual Hallbybollen youth tournament, which takes place during the first week after New Year. Organizers note that this marks the eighth time in eleven years that a national team game has been staged in tandem with the youth competition.
Connection to Youth Handball
“The international match has become a very appreciated part of the handball celebration in Jönköping in January,” Caroline Törnblad of Destination Jönköping said. “Hallbybollen fills the city with young handball players, and the opportunity for them to see their idols in the national team up close creates a wonderful connection between youth handball and the absolute top level.”
Officials hope the packed arenas and local atmosphere will provide the squad with extra energy before the players depart for Germany. In addition to the men’s fixtures, the Swedish women’s national team is scheduled to visit Idrottshuset in late October to face Brazil.

World Championship Preparation Timeline
The men’s national team enters the January tournament with ambitions of challenging for medals. The two upcoming matches against Austria represent the final competitive testing ground for the squad under coach Michael Apelgren before group-stage play commences.
For Jönköping, hosting the national side alongside the Hallbybollen participants highlights the city’s role as a recurring hub for domestic winter handball events.
