Suzhou “Street Super” youth football tournament opens at Shishan Plaza

The 2026 Jiangsu Urban Football League “Street Super” series opened its Suzhou station on Oct. 4 at the Shishan Cultural Plaza in the Suzhou New District, bringing together 24 youth teams for a fast-paced street football tournament over the National Day holiday, local media reported.

Three-a-side Cage Football Debuts in Suzhou

The Suzhou tournament features a three-a-side format designed for children born on or after Jan. 1, 2016, with rosters of three to six players per side. Matches are played without goalkeepers on enclosed pitches with no sidelines or out-of-bounds restrictions, according to tournament organizers. The competition uses a double-elimination bracket where teams are eliminated after two losses. Matches run for a continuous 10 minutes without stopping the clock, moving straight to a one-on-one goal-deciding shootout if the score is tied at the end of regulation.

Coaches and Players Adjust to Compact Rules

The compressed format created a distinct physical and tactical challenge for participants accustomed to traditional eight-a-side or five-a-side matches. Liu Donghai, coach of the Puan United Sports team, noted that the absence of boundaries and rest periods compressed the game’s tempo. Players run continuously for five or six minutes, putting them under intense physical and mental strain that differs from standard youth matches, Liu said.

Players offered mixed reviews on the unique rules and smaller pitch dimensions. Shen Andong, a player for Puan United, described the matches as intense with frequent scoring opportunities due to the limited space and fewer players on the pitch. Meanwhile, Zhang Mingyuan of the Ao Ying club said he enjoyed the novelty of the event but ultimately preferred traditional five-a-side football.

Suzhou New District Youth Squad Wins Championship

Following the opening day of competition, the Suzhou New District youth squad claimed the championship with an undefeated record. The Yingjun youngsters secured second place, the Lianhua Women’s Football team finished third, and the Shunxing youngsters, Ziyouren, and Ao Ying youngsters received organization awards.

The tournament is split across two independent competition days. The second round is scheduled for Oct. 11, when another 24 youth teams will take to the Shishan Cultural Plaza pitches.

Expansion Plans for Jiangsu Urban Football

As a companion event to the Jiangsu Urban Football League, the “Street Super” series features a single “novice” division focused on participation, recreation, and local character. Placing the 2026 opening event in Suzhou allowed organizers to test venue infrastructure, tournament scheduling, refereeing logistics, and support protocols. Officials plan to formally integrate the “Street Super” concept into the broader Jiangsu Urban Football League structure starting in 2027, with regular preliminary rounds hosted across multiple cities to expand grassroots participation in urban commercial areas.
