Broderick Jones and the 2023 Draft Timeline
Selected 14th overall out of Georgia in the 2023 NFL Draft, offensive tackle Broderick Jones did not finish his time with Pittsburgh after they declined his fifth-year option. It was reported that after Jones sustained a neck injury in 2025, the Steelers declined to exercise his fifth-year option. The franchise sent him to the Dallas Cowboys in 2026. Just three selections later in the 2023 draft, the New England Patriots drafted cornerback Christian González, who has since become the highest-paid player at his position.
Troy Fautanu and the Jared Verse Comparison
The selection of Washington offensive tackle Troy Fautanu with the 20th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft stands as one of the few selections that has worked for the Steelers. Fautanu remains on the roster and has been a starter. However, it was noted that one pick earlier, the Los Angeles Rams selected Jared Verse, who has registered 12 sacks in just two complete seasons.
Derrick Harmon and Multiple Injuries
Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, selected 21st overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, remains with the team, though injuries have diminished his career. It was reported that Harmon suffered a collateral ligament sprain in his knee during the 2025 season, followed by a left foot injury this year. Alternative options available at that same draft who could have fit the Pittsburgh scheme included wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (19), Jahdae Barron (20), and Omarion Hampton (21).
Max Iheanachor and 2026 Rookie Integration
Continuing the team’s reliance on early offensive line investments, the Steelers selected Arizona State tackle Max Iheanachor with the 21st pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. It was reported that Iheanachor has spent only three weeks in the starting lineup after recovering from a neck injury. Draft boards in 2026 also featured players such as Makai Lemon (20) and Caleb Banks (18), who could have had an immediate impact.
