San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk faces an uncertain NFL future following a severe knee injury, missed rehabilitation sessions, and a public fallout with his team and former college quarterback Jayden Daniels, SPORT1 reported. Once secured by a four-year contract extension worth up to $120 million with $76 million guaranteed, Aiyuk’s standing within the franchise disintegrated after he tore his ACL against the Kansas City Chiefs in October 2024.
Contract Strains and Rehabilitation Absences in San Francisco
Following his October 2024 knee injury, Aiyuk’s relationship with the 49ers deteriorated rapidly. According to US media reports, the 28-year-old wide receiver repeatedly skipped rehabilitation sessions at the team facility, prompting the 49ers to void $25 million in bonus money. Communication between the player and the organization eventually broke down completely. Instead of addressing the team privately, Aiyuk posted a series of social media messages on Instagram that included criticism of team employees, displays of his finances, and mocking remarks regarding an automobile accident involving head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Public Discord with Jayden Daniels and Washington Commanders
Aiyuk also jeopardized a potential landing spot with the Washington Commanders, where he had been heavily linked due to his friendship with former college quarterback Jayden Daniels. As trade rumors swirled, Aiyuk posted images of himself wearing Commanders merchandise and claimed on Instagram that he had purchased a $10 million home near the team’s training facility. The relationship soured when a video surfaced showing Daniels smiling as a 49ers fan yelled an insult about Aiyuk. In response, Aiyuk publicly attacked Daniels on social media, writing in part: You are now in my team. You follow my rules. I am a grown man, boy. You have to stop running to your mom first, maybe I’ll believe what you’re talking about.
Following the public dispute, the Commanders opted to acquire Stefon Diggs instead.
Former Teammates Question a Potential NFL Return
Former 49ers defensive player Mark Nzeocha, who played in San Francisco from 2017 to 2021, expressed dismay over Aiyuk’s trajectory in an interview with SPORT1. I experienced Brandon back then as a super cool teammate,
Nzeocha said. He was still young, but a hard worker, a very talented player. I was always a fan of his, I have to be completely honest.
Nzeocha added that he would be surprised if another NFL franchise signed the receiver given the recent public attacks against the organization. Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner echoed that assessment on the podcast The Grit Code, stating that Aiyuk had sealed his fate and likely played his final down in the league after alienating both the 49ers’ leadership and his lone remaining ally in Washington.
Procedural Hurdles Facing a Return to the Gridiron
Any potential return to the NFL carries significant procedural obstacles. Aiyuk remains under contract with the 49ers through 2028, but the franchise placed him on the reserve/left squad list. To resume his career with San Francisco or any other club, Aiyuk would be required to submit a formal, personal petition for reinstatement to NFL Roger Goodell and the 49ers front office. With communication lines severed and no official indication of reconciliation from either side, those filings remain unwritten.
