Spain defeated the Czech Republic 3–1 on Saturday night in Oviedo during the third matchday of the UEFA Nations League, maintaining their place at the top of Group A3.
Yamal Strikes Early Again in Oviedo
The defending world champions extended their unbeaten run in official competition to 41 matches at Estadio Carlos Tartiere, though they encountered moments of resistance from the visitors. Lamine Yamal put the hosts ahead after six minutes when he found space at the edge of the penalty area and curled a left-footed shot into the far top corner. Roman Macek was unable to prevent the Barcelona winger from cutting inside to finish. The goal continued a remarkable scoring sequence for Yamal, who previously netted in the second minute against England and the second minute against Croatia during the tournament.
Spain Maintains Possession to Secure Victory
Spain maintained sustained possession throughout the first half, testing Czech goalkeeper Antonín Kinský through attempts by Álex Baena and Yamal. Luis de la Fuente substituted Yamal at halftime, introducing Víctor Muñoz as the Roja rotated their lineup with a comfortable advantage. The tempo dropped significantly in the second half, though Kinský produced a save to deny Roberto Fernández in the 49th minute.
Czech Republic Capitalizes on Defensive Lulls
Despite being largely dominated, the Czech Republic reduced the deficit in the 69th minute when left-back Jiří Sláma struck a deflected cross past David Raya for his first international goal. The visitors nearly found an equalizer ten minutes later when Raya dropped a cross near his goal line and an attempt was pushed into the net, though the referee whistled for a foul, nullifying the sequence. Late in the match, Czech captain Ladislav Krejčí received a second yellow card for a foul on Fernández and was sent off in the 85th minute. Mikel Merino confirmed the three points for the hosts in the 89th minute, steering home to seal a 3–1 final scoreline.

Yamal Matches Rare Scoring Record
Football statistician Mister Chip noted on the social network X that Yamal’s early goal made him the first player to score within the opening six minutes in three consecutive international matches since Kyrgyzstan’s Antoine Zemlianioukhine achieved the feat between December 2017 and March 2018. Zemlianioukhine scored in the first minute against Brunei, the fifth against Myanmar, and the second against India. Yamal’s sequence featured goals in the second minute against England, the second minute against Croatia, and the sixth minute against the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Kinský earned his first senior cap for the Czech Republic at age 23 following his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, performing multiple saves during sustained Spanish pressure.
Spain Holds Lead in Group A3
With the victory, Spain consolidated first place in Group A3, holding a three-point advantage over England. The reigning world champions conclude their international break on Tuesday with an away fixture in Split against Croatia, who enter the match following a heavy defeat to the Three Lions.
