Spain beat Czech Republic 3-1 as De la Fuente debuts Fresneda and Roberto

Spain national team manager Luis de la Fuente integrated two new debutants into his squad during a hard-fought 3–1 victory over the Czech Republic at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo, bringing his total number of debutants to 55 since taking charge of the senior side.

Revolutionary Lineup Changes in Oviedo

Faced with a mounting injury list that included midfielder Fabián returning to Paris for the birth of his first child, De la Fuente rolled out a fresh starting eleven in Asturias. Iván Fresneda and Roberto Fernández earned their first senior caps, anchoring the right side of the pitch and leading the attacking line respectively. The match brought together familiar faces from the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s technical structure, as De la Fuente caught up with former colleagues Santi Denia and Pablo Amo prior to kickoff.

The fixture also reunited the manager with several players he originally promoted during his tenure with Spain’s Under-21 side. Cucurella, Zubimendi, and Josep Martínez—who all debuted under De la Fuente during the 2021 UEFA European Championship quarantine period triggered by Sergio Busquets’ positive COVID-19 test—featured alongside the newest arrivals at the Tartiere.

Debut Performances on the Flanks and Up Front

Wearing the number 4 shirt, Sporting Portugal full-back Iván Fresneda played the full 90 minutes. During the opening half, he shared the right flank with Lamine Yamal, contributing actively to the attack before absorbing defensive pressure after the Barcelona forward was substituted. That defensive burden grew noticeably in the second half when the Czech Republic mounted a persistent comeback attempt.

«It is a good team, with a great coach and coaching staff, and in the second half they gave us a fight. We knew it was not going to be easy at all,» Fresneda remarked after the final whistle. «Of course I have fulfilled a dream. I have had a very good few weeks with the group, learning and enjoying.»

Espanyol striker Roberto Fernández likewise played the complete match wearing the number 17 jersey, though his offensive impact was limited to a single shot on target. He spent much of the match drawing central defenders away to create space for teammates before absorbing a heavy challenge near the touchline shortly before Spain secured their third goal.

«I am exhausted, I have taken beatings from all sides,» Roberto told Televisión Española. «I could not score, but I am happy to have dragged central defenders so that other teammates could finish. I am a striker and I want to score goals, but it was my debut and I was enjoying it. It has been a lot of sacrifice for many years.»

Lamine Yamal Sets the Early Standard

Among the veterans of De la Fuente’s youth-to-senior pipeline, Lamine Yamal continued his dominant international form. Having made his senior debut under the manager at just 16 years and two months of age, the young winger once again unlocked an opponent early in the fixture. After scoring inside two minutes against both England at Wembley and Croatia in Seville, Yamal needed only six minutes at the Tartiere to beat Czech goalkeeper Kinsky by cutting in from the right and curling a shot into the far top corner.

The victory preserved Spain’s momentum under a technical staff that has steadily expanded the senior roster to 55 players over the past several years.
