South Korea Hosts 19th National School Sports Club Festival for 20,000 Students

National School Sports Club Festival Expands Across South Korea

“Sweat dropped together, passion united as one!”

That is the official slogan for the 19th National School Sports Club Festival, which the South Korean Ministry of Education announced will be held. The massive multi-venue showcase brings together approximately 20,000 students and supervising teachers for competition in 19 distinct sports disciplines.

Established in 2008, the annual event aims to promote student health and peer camaraderie through athletics. Participants representing elementary, middle, and high schools across the country secured their places in the national showcase through regional preliminaries administered by local education offices.

A Multi-Week Venue Schedule Across Host Cities

The schedule spans four weeks from October 23 to November 15. Matches will unfold across host cities including Seoul, Jecheon in North Chungcheong Province, and Gimhae in South Gyeongsang Province.

Athletes will compete across 19 disciplines, featuring traditional team and individual sports such as badminton, football, table tennis, basketball, rope skipping, and volleyball. Detailed daily timetables and match outcomes are published on the official School Sports Club Portal.

Accommodation for High School Seniors After the Suneung

Organizers introduced a specific tournament adjustment for this year’s edition to accommodate high school seniors whose academic schedules previously restricted participation.

Following the national college entrance examination, known as the Suneung, dedicated competitions will take place in Iksan, North Jeolla Province. These sessions feature volleyball tournaments for male senior high students and badminton fixtures for female senior high participants. The Ministry of Education stated that the addition aims to relieve academic strain and provide graduating students with a meaningful athletic conclusion to their secondary education.

Educational Support and Cheering Culture Initiatives

Beyond competitive fixtures, the festival schedule incorporates regional cultural excursion programs alongside general physical activity sessions.

To foster sportsmanship among attendees, the Ministry of Education distributed preparatory guidance materials to regional education offices regarding spectator etiquette and mutual respect. Authorities are also running a social media challenge centered on proper cheering practices to encourage disciplined and supportive supporter behavior across all participating school communities.

Lifelong Physical Education Habits and Ministry Goals

Yoo Ji-wan, the Ministry of Education’s school support director, outlined the long-term goals of the initiative.

We will further strengthen support for school physical education so that sports experiences during school days can become lifelong healthy habits and a vital source of energy in life.
