Sophie Marceau reflects on turning 60 and her career

French actress Sophie Marceau is reflecting on her career and approaching her 60th birthday while preparing for the release of her autobiographical book, Warszawa, set for publication on October 29. Approaching the milestone of age 60 on November 17, the star of the classic film La Boum discussed her life, her childhood, and her perspective on modern parenting during a recent interview with Paris Match.

The interview took place while Marceau served as the godmother for a Mediterranean cruise organized to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Arc-en-ciel association. As she looks back on a career that began in her early teens, the actress also considered what the coming decades might hold, noting that she may eventually step into the role of a grandmother.

Reflecting on a Fast-Track Childhood and Youth

Marceau recalled her early years during the interview, describing a childhood that ended abruptly when she entered the public eye at age 13. “I was a child, but it was very short, until I was 13. So, inevitably, there are gaps, but that’s life… I matured quickly, I have the impression of having taken shortcuts,” she said.

Rather than viewing those formative years solely as a loss of normalcy, the actress credits that unique youth with giving her resilience. She contrasted her early independence with how she perceives contemporary youth culture, arguing that modern children are shielded for much longer. “Today, we keep our children for a long time. They have nice connected toys, they are very protected and, at 24, they find themselves a bit destitute when entering active life, even if they are loaded with degrees… I wouldn’t have liked that, I liked improvisation,” she stated.

Contrasting Modern Parenting With Past Simplicity

As a mother of two—Vincent, born July 24, 1995, from her relationship with the late Polish director Andrzej Żuławski, and Juliette, born June 13, 2002, from her past relationship with American producer Jim Lemley—Marceau observed that contemporary parents face distinct pressures. She noted that modern child-rearing often involves a high degree of anxiety regarding diet, media consumption, and ideological alignment.

“Parents today are anxious. Children have to eat this, read that, see this, think like that… There was less choice at the time, and therefore less possibility of getting lost. If I had been the mother of young children today, I would have managed,” she said.

Marceau Prepares for Future Family Dynamics

With her upcoming autobiographical work Warszawa arriving in bookstores on October 29 and her 60th birthday approaching on November 17, Marceau addressed the passage of time and the possibility of expanding her family tree in the coming years. Looking ahead to the next decade, she acknowledged that she will need to adapt to new familial dynamics.

“And maybe one day I’ll have grandchildren, so I’m still going to have to face the 2030s. I’ll improvise…” she said.
