Slovakia men’s national football team arrived on the Faroe Islands on Wednesday evening, preparing for their third fixture in Group 3 of the UEFA Nations League C-Division scheduled for Friday at 20:45 CEST (18:45 local time) at the Tórsvöllur stadium in Tórshavn.
Journey to the Faroe Islands and Weather Challenges
The Slovak delegation landed at Vágar Airport following a three-hour flight from Košice, touching down at 18:45 local time. While the flight was largely smooth, turbulence emerged during the final approach before the aircraft landed safely. The squad subsequently traveled to the capital city of Tórshavn.
Upon arrival, the team encountered temperatures ranging between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius, with gusty winds significantly lowering the wind chill factor. Variable weather conditions frequently complicate travel to the North Atlantic archipelago. Weather disruptions previously forced the Czech Republic national team to extend their stay by an extra day following a 2023 World Cup qualifying defeat.
Squad Management and Training Conditions
Head coach Vladimír Weiss oversees a 26-man traveling squad, which includes four goalkeepers. Three players—Hugo Pavek, Mario Sauer, and Nino Marcelli—remain with the Slovakia under-21 national team through the end of the international window.

Speaking about the local environment ahead of the team’s Thursday evening training session on the artificial turf at Tórshavn, Weiss pointed to the physical demands awaiting his players. “I spoke with the Kazakh guys who played there before us. The terrain will be difficult, a hard pitch, strong wind, rain, not good conditions for football. That’s what awaits us on the Faroe Islands. I know the local conditions there, I played at that stadium with Slovan,” Weiss stated, according to the official Slovak Football Association website (futbalsfz.sk).
Tactical Rotations and Standings Context
Slovakia enters the fixture holding early momentum in the group following home victories against Moldova and Kazakhstan. The primary objective is securing another victory to edge closer to promotion back into the UEFA Nations League B-Division.

However, the combination of an artificial playing surface, a congested schedule, and player workloads will necessitate tactical adjustments. “There are difficult matches on the Faroe Islands. A physically demanding duel awaits us. Both teams play on the same pitch, but the hosts know how to play on it. We have to hit the right lineup, also considering the artificial turf and the congested schedule, there will certainly be changes in the lineup, rotation of players,” Weiss explained to futbalsfz.sk. “The hosts will fight, they have it in their blood. We want to take points from the opponent, to win, we’ll see what they allow us.”
Thirty Years Since Dubovský’s Decisive Goal
Friday’s fixture marks Slovakia’s first appearance on the Faroe Islands in three decades. The national team last played away against the Faroese on August 31, 1996, securing a 2-1 victory in Toftir during qualification for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
During that 1996 encounter under manager Jozef Jankech, Ľubomír Moravčík opened the scoring for Slovakia before Peter Dubovský sealed the win with a crucial free-kick in the 90th minute.
