Sky: Borussia Dortmund working to extend Waldemar Anton’s contract

Borussia Dortmund is working to extend defender Waldemar Anton’s contract before it expires, securing the German international’s position in the club’s central defense, Sky reported. The 30-year-old center-back currently has a deal running through June 2028, but club officials are moving early to lock down his long-term future alongside defensive partner Nico Schlotterbeck.

Anton Establishes Himself as Regular Dortmund Starter

Anton arrived at Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024 from VfB Stuttgart for a fixed fee of 22.5 million euros, according to Sky Sport. He quickly established himself as a regular starter under difficult circumstances, stepping up while fellow central defender Schlotterbeck battled recurring injury absences. During his first full Bundesliga campaign with the Schwarz-Gelben, Anton appeared in 32 of 34 possible league fixtures. Across all competitions, the defender has accumulated 93 official appearances for the club, contributing six goals and four assists.

Coach Niko Kovac Supports Keeping Anton Long-Term

Inside the club, Anton is widely regarded as a quiet leader and a crucial pillar of the backline, earning high praise from head coach Niko Kovac. According to Sky Sport, Kovac is a major proponent of keeping Anton anchored in Dortmund’s defense long-term. This push for continuity mirrors the club’s approach with Kovac himself, whom management also aims to keep on board.
