Simion Michez aims for Belgium squad after move to KV Mechelen

Simion Michez targets Belgium national team call-up after joining KV Mechelen

Simion Michez has set his sights firmly on a future with the Belgium national team following his summer transfer to KV Mechelen, according to reports in the Belgian sports press. The 24-year-old winger, who spent his youth development years at RSC Anderlecht and R. Charleroi SC, returned to the Belgian Pro League after a challenging spell in the Czech Republic with Slavia Prague and a subsequent loan stint at Sigma Olomouc.

Michez emerged through the Neerpede academy system and featured prominently in the 2022–23 RSCA Futures squad managed by Guillaume Gillet. That young Anderlecht reserve side boasted several future top-flight professionals, including Théo Leoni, Lucas Stassin, Ilay Camara, Noah Sadiki, and Amando Lapage. While several of those former teammates have established themselves at senior international or high club levels, Michez’s career path took a detour abroad before bringing him back to the D1A.

The Czech Republic spell and recovery at KV Mechelen

During his time with Slavia Prague, Michez initially secured first-team opportunities, making 10 appearances in European competition before dropping out of regular selection. A subsequent loan move to Sigma Olomouc failed to provide the breakthrough he wanted, leaving the player isolated during a difficult six-month period. Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Michez described that phase as mentally taxing due to being entirely on his own without friends, family, or regular football.

Rather than letting the setback derail his trajectory, Michez emphasized that the experience strengthened his resolve. He returned to Belgium during the summer transfer window to join KV Mechelen, where he aims to secure consistent playing time, rediscover his enjoyment of the game, and prove his capability at the highest level of domestic football. His immediate objective is to help Mechelen climb the league standings while establishing himself as a top-tier wing-back in the championship.

Chasing a spot among former peers with the Red Devils

Having shared pitches across youth and domestic competitions with numerous current Red Devils squad members, Michez believes his abilities belong on the international stage. He noted that when watching the Belgium national team, he recognizes players he has routinely faced or played alongside throughout his development. Describing his ambitions to Het Laatste Nieuws, he stated that reaching the national selection is where he belongs.

Michez now focuses on delivering consistent performances for KV Mechelen in the Pro League to catch the attention of national selectors. His current contract and run of fixtures with Mechelen represent his primary platform to demonstrate the form that initially marked him out as one of Anderlecht’s promising academy prospects.
