Sichuan Gongba Luzhou Division opens with six teams in basketball play

Six municipal and enterprise teams opened play in Luzhou on October 9 for the southern division group stage of the 2026 Sichuan Provincial Workers Basketball League, known locally as the Sichuan “GongBA.”

Opening Match Sets the Pace in Luzhou

The tournament tipped off at the Luzhou venue after six representatives from the national worker pioneer organization—the Luzhou Laojiao Machong Team—jointly tossed the opening ball. The tournament operates under the banner of the “Chinese Dream, Labor Beauty” initiative, aiming to highlight athletic competition among working-class participants across the province.

In the opening fixture, the host Luzhou representative squad squared off against the Zigong team. Workers who spend their weekdays at industrial workstations and manufacturing floors traded their standard work uniforms for basketball kits, pushing the pace with full-court pressure and fast-break drives. Spectators from both municipal delegations filled the sidelines with chants, establishing a high-energy atmosphere from the opening whistle.

Reflecting on the match, Luzhou team member Zheng Kaihao noted that the unique appeal of the tournament stems from bringing laborers from varied professional backgrounds onto the same hardwood, channeling workplace resilience into athletic competition. Zigong player Wang Tianyi echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that camaraderie and cross-city sporting exchanges outweigh final scoreboard tallies for grassroots competitors.

Six Squads Compete in Luzhou Regional Site

The Luzhou regional site hosts six representative squads: Chengdu, Yibin, Zigong, Ziyang, Neijiang, and Luzhou. Over a compressed three-day window, these squads play to secure advancement slots for the provincial tournament finals.

Alongside the Luzhou-Zigong opener, the tournament schedule on opening day featured Ziyang facing Yibin and Neijiang meeting Chengdu. The broader provincial competition, which started on September 11, encompasses 50 teams from various municipalities and industrial enterprises. Organizers scheduled the multi-tiered tournament to run through November.

Integration of Local Tourism and Consumer Markets

Unlike standard regional basketball tournaments, organizers incorporated a commercial and cultural exhibition zone directly outside the venue. The site features display booths showcasing Luzhou specialties, local intangible cultural heritage demonstrations, and regional culinary snacks.

Sun Lu, director of the women workers and security work department for the Luzhou Federation of Trade Unions, explained that positioning the consumer market directly outside the arena extends worker support services beyond traditional office boundaries. The setup combines athletic recreation with economic incentives, offering attendees promotional vouchers and local retail discounts designed to stimulate municipal foot traffic and local consumption.

Tiered Qualification Structure Leads to Provincial Finals

The 2026 provincial workers tournament utilizes a tiered qualification structure, sorting municipal and industrial entries into regional groups before advancing toward the elimination rounds. The competition serves as the first provincial basketball initiative bearing the “GongBA” designation in Sichuan.

With group-stage fixtures proceeding in Luzhou, participating squads continue their pursuit of the remaining berths for the final stage of the province-wide event.
