Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens faces scrutiny over his early-season performances after conceding eight goals in his first five Premier League matches, prompting questions from former club players regarding the team’s requirements for competing at the highest level.
Senne Lammens Discusses Mental Resilience Amid Early Criticism
Senne Lammens stated that players must maintain mental strength and high self-confidence to deal with external opinions after his quality came under question during the opening weeks of the Premier League campaign. The 24-year-old goalkeeper joined Manchester United from Belgian side Royal Antwerp during the summer transfer window last year. During his debut season, Lammens recorded an impressive defensive metric by preventing 4.4 opponent goals, trailing only Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at 5.8, which led some to label him a standout recruitment for the club.
However, alongside a slow start for Manchester United at the beginning of the current season, Lammens drew heightened attention following eight conceded goals across five league fixtures. Addressing the commentary surrounding his performances, Lammens noted that his character remains unchanged by competing for Manchester United. “I do not change my character just because I play football at Manchester United,” he said, as reported. “You have to have a strong mentality and high self-confidence to deal with everyone who delivers their opinion. I can imagine that this is not easy for anyone.”

Paul Scholes Questions Long-Term Goalkeeping Solution
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes raised doubts about whether Lammens can serve as a long-term solution for the club, arguing that elite teams require top-tier goalkeepers to secure titles. “What team do you think can win the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper? Lammens maybe, I don’t know, I think it’s still unclear,” Scholes stated recently. He pointed to historical and contemporary precedents at rival clubs and Manchester United to emphasize his point. “You need a top-class goalkeeper. Call it the Liverpool team with Alisson, the City team, [David] Raya at Arsenal. Man United with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. They all had brilliant goalkeepers.”
Upcoming Premier League Fixture Against Tottenham Hotspur
Lammens prepares to return to the Manchester United starting lineup following the conclusion of the international break. Manchester United is scheduled to host Tottenham Hotspur in an upcoming Premier League fixture on October 10.
