The Senegalese National Olympic and Sports Committee officially finalized a roster of 136 athletes for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, representing the host country across 23 different sports disciplines.
Team Senegal Size Marks Historic Shift for Host Nation
The newly unveiled “Team Senegal” delegation represents a dramatic expansion compared to previous participations, where the country fielded a maximum of nine representatives. This growth follows an agreement from the International Olympic Committee, which granted the host nation a maximum quota of 139 slots for the upcoming home event.
The selected competitors will take part in both individual and collective events. Squad sizes vary considerably across the 23 sports, reflecting a blend of traditional Olympic programs and regional beach disciplines.
Rugby, Futsal, and Beach Handball Lead Roster Numbers
Rugby sevens accounts for the largest single contingent in the delegation, fielding 24 players divided evenly between girls and boys. Futsal and beach handball squads follow closely behind, each deploying 20 athletes under a strict gender-parity model featuring 10 competitors per gender.
Other team and individual disciplines feature leaner rosters. Athletics, taekwondo, swimming, fencing, boxing, gymnastics, table tennis, judo, triathlon, badminton, and baseball are all integrated into the national program. Basketball 3×3 and baseball5 each field eight athletes with equal gender splits, while beach volleyball relies on five competitors, fencing includes seven, and swimming lists six.
At the most compact end of the delegation, rowing and equestrian sports feature just one official representative each. Skipper Ousmane Thioune similarly stands as the sole entry in individual water sports for sailing.

International Training Camps Prepare National Squads
To sharpen technical performance ahead of the home Games, several Senegalese national teams completed overseas training blocks in recent months. Multiple sports federations organized collective practice sessions in China, while the wrestling selection established a dedicated training base in Besançon, France.
The 2026 Youth Olympic Games mark the first time the continent of Africa will host an event of this nature. The local organizing committee expects approximately 2,700 athletes from around the world to compete across more than 20 sports disciplines utilizing newly constructed and renovated local venues.
