Sam Darnold’s OT interception sinks Seahawks as Broncos win

Ja’Quan McMillian Interception Lifts Denver Broncos Over Seattle Seahawks

Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted a pass from Sam Darnold in overtime and Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal to secure a 17-14 victory for the Denver Broncos over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night at Empower Field at Mile High. The outcome pushed the Broncos to a 4-2 record through a demanding six-week opening stretch, navigating an injury-riddled roster and a shaky offense.

Overtime Turnovers Decide Defensive Battle in Denver

The decisive play arrived in the extra period when McMillian stepped in front of a pass intended for Rashid Shaheed at the Denver 43-yard line. It marked the second interception of the night for Darnold, whose evening ended under heavy duress from a depleted Denver defense that registered five sacks and 17 quarterback hits.

Seattle slipped to 3-3 with the loss, marking their second defeat in five days and matching their loss total from last season when they won their second Super Bowl title. The Seahawks manufactured a late rally in regulation when Jason Myers converted a 34-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to knot the score at 14-all. That drive started at midfield following a 31-yard punt return by Shaheed, which came on the heels of Denver’s sixth three-and-out of the contest.

Late Regulation Drama Precedes Overtime Finish

The Broncos appeared poised to seal regulation victory moments earlier when Kris Abrams-Draine picked off Darnold at the Denver 30-yard line with 1:25 remaining on the clock. However, the Denver offense consumed only 15 seconds before punting the ball back to Seattle.

Before that late surge, the Seahawks had managed just three points across their first eight offensive series. They then strung together an 11-play, 67-yard drive culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by running back George Holani. Darnold followed with a two-point conversion pass to Shaheed, slicing Denver’s lead to 14-11 with 5:41 left in regulation.

Bo Nix guided the Broncos on two extended scoring drives during the first half, providing the early cushion before the defense took over the physical matchup.

Roster Strains Impact Both Sidelines

Both squads weathered significant personnel losses over the course of the evening. The Seahawks played without tight end Elijah Arroyo, who exited late in the first half with an apparent right shoulder injury sustained while diving for a fumbled ball.

The Broncos played without cornerback Patrick Surtain II and starting safety Talanoa Hufanga, both sidelined by ankle injuries. Running back Tyler Badie suffered a thumb injury in the second quarter, while wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was evaluated for a shoulder injury in the third quarter before returning to action.

Upcoming Matchups on the Schedule

The Seahawks return to action on October 25 to host the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos will also take the field on October 25, welcoming the Arizona Cardinals to Denver.
