Ryota Masuji and Tetsuya Isozaki Win Gold Medals at Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games

At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 2, two athletes born in Tsukuba claimed gold medals in their respective disciplines, mirroring family legacies and years of rigorous physical conditioning. Ryotaro Masuchi secured the men’s 100-kilogram judo title at the Aichi International Arena, while Tetsuya Isozaki teamed up with Yurie Seki to win the mixed 470-class sailing competition, according to regional reports.

Masuchi, a 24-year-old competitor representing Keiyo Gas, defeated his opponents through a series of technical throws and ground control. In his opening match, he utilized rapid footwork to take down his opponent before securing an osaekomi-waza hold for an ippon victory.

During the final match, amid intense gripping exchanges, Masuchi capitalized on an opening to execute a right-footed kosoto-gari, seizing the ippon and the championship. “Simply put, I am happy,” Masuchi said after the bout. “I hadn’t been able to close out matches recently, so this feels like it paid off.”

Family Legacy in Tsukuba Judo and Weight Training Adjustments

The victory mirrors an achievement by his father, Katsuyuki Masuchi, who won the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games openweight gold medal. Katsuyuki, 56, previously served as the head coach for the Japanese women’s national judo team at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games following his retirement from competitive sports. Ryotaro’s mother, Chiyori, also earned a bronze medal in the women’s 56-kilogram category at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Despite his family’s prominent background in the sport, Ryotaro faced physical hurdles through his university years, struggling to build body mass naturally. To counter a constitution that resisted weight gain, he increased his weight-training regimen and modified his dietary habits after joining a corporate team in 2024. Katsuyuki observed the matches from the venue in his capacity as a reinforcement vice-chairperson for the national federation.

Tetsuya Isozaki and Yurie Seki Dominate Mixed 470 Sailing

On the water, 34-year-old Tetsuya Isozaki of JPN22 Racing and his sailing partner, Yurie Seki, claimed the mixed 470 gold medal after controlling the fleet across ten total races. The pair captured first place in five of the ten races, utilizing precise sail adjustments to handle shifting wind conditions on the final day of competition.

Following that setback, he stepped away from active competition until Seki invited him to target the Paris Olympic cycle in May 2022.

Training Intensity and Focus on the Los Angeles Games

Although the pair missed qualification for the Paris Games, they placed fourth at the world championships in August prior to their gold-medal performance at the Asian Games. Isozaki noted that the rigorous training volume required to adapt to the mixed-gender class has elevated their competitiveness on the international stage.

“We had no choice but to make it work through an overwhelming amount of practice,” Isozaki said. “We are steadily building the capability to fight against the world’s top competitors, and I want to acquire another tier of technique to aim for gold in Los Angeles.”
