The Radevormwald Turnverein badminton department hosted the NRW Youth District Tournament at the Hermannstraße gymnasium, where local athletes secured podium finishes and qualification spots for the upcoming regional championships amid packed stands and notable logistical hurdles.
Tournament Organization and Attendance at Hermannstraße
Hosting the district tournament brought significant organizational pressure, according to head coach and department leader Oliver Frielingsdorf. Speaking about the event day, Frielingsdorf noted that the large influx of visiting teams, parents, and coaches generated a vibrant atmosphere inside the venue. At times, the spectator numbers on the stands along Hermannstraße reached levels that prompted concerns regarding the structural capacity of the seating area.
Venue Lacks Step-Free Access for Wheelchair Users
Event organizers encountered two major challenges during the competition. The first involved an accessibility barrier when a spectator using a wheelchair arrived to watch his son play on the upper viewing area. Because the Hermannstraße venue lacks step-free access to the stands, tournament helpers manually carried the visitor up the stairs. Frielingsdorf stated that he intends to discuss potential facility improvements with municipal authorities to ensure better accessibility for future events.

In a separate incident during the matches, a youth player from Leverkusen sustained a severe ligament injury that required hospital transport. The on-site German Red Cross team intervened immediately to stabilize and care for the athlete. Frielingsdorf later confirmed that the player avoided any bone fractures and is currently recovering from the joint trauma.
RTV Youth Qualification for Regional Championships
On the court, Radevormwald competitors delivered strong results through demanding matches decided largely by endurance and determination. In the girls’ under-11 category, Lani Mia Zieß claimed second place behind winner Anna Holzwarth of TTC Brauweiler. Her club teammate, Ida-Maria Zagalak, finished fifth. Both RTV athletes secured qualification for the regional championships. Meanwhile, Vivienne Hu earned a third-place finish in the under-13 division, securing her own spot at the next tier of competition.
Upcoming Regional Championships in Bergisch Gladbach
The regional championships are scheduled for Sunday, October 11, in Bergisch Gladbach, where the qualified Radevormwald players will continue their tournament schedule. Frielingsdorf indicated that the club has not yet decided whether to apply to host the youth district tournament again next year, noting that while the sporting outcomes were rewarding, running the multi-day event placed heavy demands on a small volunteer staff.
