Roman Maksimyuk Death Confirmed By DNA Testing After Months Missing

DNA testing has confirmed the death of Roman Maksimyuk, who went missing on January 30, 2025, while serving on the frontline near Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region, according to reports by Ukrainian media.

Months of Uncertainty End with DNA Confirmation

The confirmation brings a tragic end to months of uncertainty for Maksimyuk’s family. He was reported missing after undertaking military assignments in the direction of Pokrovsk. His wife filed a missing person report, and his daughter underwent DNA testing. Family members announced the final test results matching Maksimyuk’s identity.

From Pitch to Frontline Defense

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Maksimyuk stepped away from sport to join the country’s defense forces in the autumn of 2022. Before enlisting, he participated in charity football tournaments to raise funds for military vehicles. Upon joining the military, he initially served in air defense units before deploying directly to the frontline with Ukraine’s 25th Separate Sichoslav Airborne Brigade.

Championship Career with Zenit and Dynamo

During his professional playing career at the turn of the millennium, Maksimyuk earned five caps for the Ukraine national team. At club level, he achieved major domestic success. He won the Russian Cup with Zenit Saint Petersburg in 1999 before capturing the title with Dynamo Kyiv in 2000, alongside stints with Dnipro.

Plans Cut Short by War

While serving in the armed forces, Maksimyuk maintained his connection to the sport and expressed a desire to transition into coaching once the war concluded. Those plans ended on the frontline in eastern Ukraine, where DNA analysis confirmed his death months after he was first reported missing.
