Rick Welts Retiring as Dallas Mavericks CEO, Ethan Casson to Take Over

Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts will step down from his position at the end of the year, bringing a close to nearly five decades of work in the National Basketball Association. Team president Ethan Casson will take over the CEO role and also serve as an alternative governor starting January 1, 2027, according to announcements reported by the Associated Press and CBS News.

Retirement Announcement and Leadership Transition

Welts, 73, will remain with the franchise through December 31 to manage the leadership handover. Casson, who joined the Mavericks organization last year after spending nine years as CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves, will officially step into the chief executive post on January 1, 2027. Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont stated in team remarks reported by the Associated Press that Welts brought invaluable leadership, judgment, and experience to the organization during a critical period.

The leadership change arrives as the franchise looks toward future infrastructure projects. The team announced plans for a new arena in northern Dallas scheduled to open for the 2031–32 season, moving away from downtown Dallas where the club has played since its 1980–81 campaign.

Career Milestones and Hall of Fame Recognition

Welts’ career in professional basketball spans almost five decades, beginning as a ball boy in Seattle. Over the decades, he held prominent executive positions within the NBA league office, the Phoenix Suns, and the Golden State Warriors, where he helped oversee the franchise’s move into the Chase Center. In recognition of his administrative impact across the sport, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Beyond his operational roles, Welts became one of the most prominent openly gay executives in American professional sports when he publicly disclosed his sexual orientation in 2011. His professional journey and its significance for gay youth have been examined in academic settings, including a case study by the Stanford Graduate School of Business that documented how his career intersected with visibility in men’s sports.

Upcoming Administrative Schedule

Welts holds his executive responsibilities in Dallas through December 31, ensuring a structured transition period for the front office. Casson assumes the duties of CEO and alternative governor on January 1, 2027, as the franchise prepares for its upcoming operational phases under new executive leadership.
