Richard Ringer runs the Frankfurt Marathon for late daughter

When the starting gun sounds for the Frankfurt Marathon on Sunday, Richard Ringer will be running not just for a spot on the podium, but for his late daughter, April Lucia Vivienne. The 37-year-old German distance runner enters the race exactly one year after a devastating personal loss that reshaped his relationship with elite competition.

The Loss That Changed Everything

Last October, Ringer and his partner, Austrian track athlete Nada Ina Pauer, suffered the death of their child through a stillbirth on Oct. 24, 2025. Complications arose after the umbilical cord wrapped multiple times around the baby’s leg, cutting off adequate nourishment. Medical staff induced artificial labor after days passed without the issue being detected. Ringer and Pauer later shared their grief publicly on Instagram, a decision Ringer described to dpa as a vital release that spared them from repeatedly recounting the tragedy to acquaintances who knew a baby was expected.

The aftermath tested the limits of endurance. Ringer told journalists that running helped him through the hardest time of his life, admitting that the mental weight was so heavy he felt no physical pain during his training. By January, he was back on the starting line, carrying his daughter’s memory into every race from Boston to Birmingham and Cologne.

Ringer Prepares for Frankfurt After Breaking Cologne Record

Ringer arrives in Frankfurt following a swift and demanding training cycle. Three weeks prior to the main event, he smashed the course record at the Cologne Half Marathon by 72 seconds with a time of 61:48 minutes, a performance that surprised even him and validated his fitness. Yet he enters the race with cautious realism about his recovery from the European Athletics Championships, where he finished 10th behind Amanal Petros and Samuel Fitwi.

Frankfurt holds a foundational place in Ringer’s marathon career. In 2018, he was engaged as a pacemaker for Arne Gabius. That exploratory effort eventually paved the way for his transition from the track—where he won 5,000-meter bronze at the 2016 European Championships—to the roads, culminating in his marathon gold medal at the 2022 European Championships in Munich.

Tactical Approach and the Road to Los Angeles

While Petros has openly stated his intention to attack the European record in Frankfurt, Ringer indicated that his strategy will hinge on pacing and position rather than chasing absolute speed. Petros holds the German record at 2:04:03, followed by Fitwi at 2:04:45, with Ringer sitting third on the all-time German list with 2:05:46 hours. Ringer also aims to beat his personal best of 2:04:47 hours.

Looking beyond Sunday, Ringer plans to focus on the qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which would mark his fourth appearance at the Summer Games. However, the loss of his daughter has altered his perspective on elite sport. He confessed that the pressure of competition has lifted, leaving him free from frustration when things go awry because he now recognizes what truly matters in life.
