“There probably won’t be another club for him,” René van der Gijp said bluntly on the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp.
The analyst made his assessment of Gertjan Verbeek’s career prospects while addressing a viewer’s question about whether the 64-year-old Deventenaar would ever return to the professional dugout. Verbeek has been out of professional management since 2021, when he stood at the helm of Almere City. He currently works primarily as an analyst, making regular television appearances on ESPN.
A Recurring Cycle of Friction
According to the analyst, Verbeek typically departs organizations amid the exact same operational difficulties. Van der Gijp stated that professional clubs are unlikely to take a chance on the manager due to recurring interpersonal friction.

“Because he actually left all clubs with the same problems. It is difficult to communicate, and that is not fun for a club,” Van der Gijp explained during the podcast episode.
The Search for Authoritative Leadership
The former footballer noted that Verbeek has historically required a specific dynamic to thrive in management.
That vital dynamic is an authoritative figure above him whom he deeply respects. Van der Gijp pointed to Jan Smit and Riemer van der Velde as examples of leaders Verbeek looked up to during successful tenures. He contrasted those harmonious relationships directly with his time at AZ, where no such figure existed.
Praise Off the Touchline
Despite forecasting a permanent end to Verbeek’s managerial path, Van der Gijp offered a warm assessment of the coach’s character away from the pressure of the touchline. The analyst described the former Feyenoord and FC Twente coach as an exceptionally kind individual.

“He is a super nice guy,” Van der Gijp said.
Late-Night Stories Underscore the Paradox
The analyst admitted that the coach’s warm off-field demeanor directly contradicts his turbulent career trajectory.

“I have said it to him more often, but I honestly do not understand that he ran into those problems at all those clubs,” Van der Gijp added. “You can sit down with him here in the evening and you will still be sitting with him at half past two at night. Telling stories, he really is a very nice guy.”
Verbeek’s professional coaching timeline includes stints at several clubs, culminating in his tenure at Almere City in 2021.
