Fans of Rayo Vallecano forced the abandonment of their Spanish league home match against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday at the Estadio de Vallecas in Madrid, pelting the pitch with paper airplanes and other objects in the 13th minute in protest against club president Raúl Martín Presa and the executive board.
Match Abandonment at Estadio de Vallecas
The fixture was halted with the score tied at 0-0 after debris rained down onto the playing surface from the stands. Referee Víctor García Verdura initially paused the contest, consulting with police officers on the sideline before holding discussions with Vallecano manager Bénat San José and Athletic Bilbao head coach Edin Terzic, formerly of Borussia Dortmund. The match officials then ordered both squads to leave the pitch.
Although the players briefly returned following a temporary suspension, supporters renewed the barrage of objects immediately after the restart, prompting the referee to call off the fixture permanently. The disruption unfolded during Rayo Vallecano’s first home fixture of the season in the working-class Vallecas district of Madrid.
Stadion Closure and Fan Boycotts
The fixture carried heightened tension due to administrative decisions that displaced the club from its traditional home ground. City authorities previously ordered the Estadio de Vallecas temporarily closed over safety concerns, stripping the club of its operating license due to the deteriorating condition of the facility.

As a result, Rayo Vallecano played their three previous home matches of the campaign in the southern Madrid suburb of Leganés. Many core supporters organized boycotts of those temporary fixtures in protest against the club leadership’s handling of the stadium crisis. The club’s next scheduled home fixture in Vallecas is set for Oct. 24 against Elche.
Contrasting Fortunes in La Liga
While crowd protests disrupted proceedings in Vallecas, FC Barcelona maintained its commanding position at the summit of the Spanish league standings. Hansi Flick’s side defeated Getafe 3-0 on goals from Anthony Gordon, Gabriel Jesus, and Jules Koundé, extending their winning run to eight matches and accumulating 24 points.

Barcelona holds a significant advantage over rival contenders Real Madrid ahead of the upcoming El Clásico clash scheduled for Oct. 25. Before that meeting, Flick’s squad faces Champions League fixtures against Galatasaray on Oct. 13 and Paris Saint-Germain on Oct. 20.
