Ralf Rangnick outlines demands for new Austria sporting director

Austria national team head coach Ralf Rangnick stated that the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) is searching for an impossible combination of traits—colloquially termed an “eierlegende Wollmilchsau“—as officials look for a successor to former sporting director Peter Schöttel before the end of the year.

The Search Process and Supervisory Board Control

Schöttel was removed from his post three weeks ago after holding the position for nine years. Association head Josef Pröll leads the supervisory board tasked with finding a replacement, working alongside a specialized working group that includes deputy heads Johannes Wutzlhofer and Philip Thonhauser, as well as managing directors Thomas Hollerer and Bernhard Neuhold. Rangnick clarified during a press conference in Dublin ahead of the UEFA Nations League fixture against Ireland that he has no direct involvement in the recruitment process.

Rangnick Defines His Criteria for the Role

While maintaining distance from the administrative search, Rangnick articulated clear expectations for the profile of the next sporting director. Drawing on his experience over the past 15 years dating back to his tenure at 1899 Hoffenheim, the manager emphasized a commitment to finding the “best man for the job.” Rangnick stated that the association needs the strongest and best possible candidate who can actively contribute across multiple areas of operations, while acknowledging the immense scope of the requirements being drawn up by the working group.
