Racist Abuse in Guatemala: Immanuel Pherai Slams “Worst Match

Hamburg SV midfielder Immanuel Pherai has characterized Suriname’s recent 1-0 CONCACAF Nations League loss to Guatemala as the most difficult match of his career, citing a sustained environment of racist abuse and hostility. The 25-year-old, who earned his 15th international cap during the fixture in Guatemala City, stated that the team faced significant provocation from the moment they arrived, culminating in a match he described as “the worst match of my career so far.”

Pherai alleged that Suriname was denied access to the Estadio El Trébol for their final training session, forcing the squad to practice on a different surface. The team also experienced a disrupted night at their hotel, where fireworks and noise were used to disturb the players before the Tuesday night match.

Hostility during national anthem and match play

Pherai noted that while crowd whistles during the team’s pre-match pitch inspection were expected in a hostile away environment, the atmosphere deteriorated significantly as the game progressed. He reported that the national anthem was met with persistent heckling and whistling, which he deemed “unsporting and disrespectful.”

Once the match began, Pherai alleged that roughly 25,000 spectators directed continuous racist slurs at the Suriname players. Sport Bild reported that Pherai identified the specific use of the phrase “Negro, Negro, Negro” throughout the 90 minutes. The midfielder noted that the team had previously encountered similar racist treatment during a match in El Salvador, highlighting a recurring issue for the squad in the region.

Escalation following the dismissal of Richonell Margaret

The situation intensified in the 63rd minute when Suriname striker Richonell Margaret was issued a red card. Pherai stated that as Margaret exited the field toward the locker room, he was subjected to monkey noises and pelted with bottles and food items by the crowd.

The Suriname players attempted to raise these concerns with referee Joe Dickerson. Pherai expressed frustration regarding the officiating, telling Sport Bild that the referee did not respond decisively to the team’s complaints, instead suggesting the opposing side was merely attempting to provoke them. Pherai recalled asking the official, “And what are you doing about it?”

Riot police intervene after match confrontation

Guatemala secured the victory with a goal from Matt Evans in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Following the final whistle, the tension spilled over into a mass confrontation involving players from both sides. Pherai acknowledged that while the team’s emotions were high, the environment contributed to the chaotic scenes on the pitch.

Sport Bild reported that a special unit of the riot police eventually entered the field to address the fighting, though Pherai noted there was a significant delay in their intervention. “It was strange, the police only came onto the pitch ten minutes later,” Pherai said. “But they didn’t intervene.”

Looking ahead to future international fixtures in Guatemala or El Salvador, Pherai expressed skepticism that the climate for visiting teams would improve. “I’m curious to see what it will be like in the future when we play in Guatemala or El Salvador again,” he said. “But I don’t think it will be significantly different.”
