PSG prepares 70-million-euro bid for Eric Garcia

Paris Saint-Germain has identified FC Barcelona defender Eric Garcia as a primary target for the upcoming summer transfer window, with the French club reportedly prepared to pay a €70 million transfer fee, according to Le Parisien.

PSG Interest and Valuation

Le Parisien reported that Paris Saint-Germain is willing to commit €70 million to secure the versatile defender. This interest follows a pattern from roughly a year ago when the French serial champions monitored Garcia as his previous contract approached expiration. At that time, the center-back chose to remain in Catalonia, signing a contract extension in December 2025 that runs through 2031 and contains a €400 million release clause.

Garcia Career Path and Barcelona Return

Born in Barcelona, Garcia joined the La Masia academy at the age of seven before moving to Manchester City’s youth system at 16, where he eventually made his professional debut. He returned to Barcelona in 2021 at age 20. After struggling to secure a consistent starting role during his first two seasons, he spent the 2023–24 campaign on loan at Girona. Upon returning to Camp Nou, his future remained unsettled. Early in 2025, a transfer to Italian side Como was reportedly close to completion before Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick intervened and blocked the move.

Role Under Hansi Flick

Under Flick, Garcia has carved out an essential role within the squad, valued for his tactical flexibility and work ethic. While primarily deployed as a center-back, he can also play both full-back positions and operate as a defensive midfielder. His contributions have made him one of Flick’s most trusted players. For the current season, Garcia has featured in eight of Barcelona’s 10 possible fixtures.

International Recognition and World Cup Success

Garcia’s club form has also restored his standing with the Spanish national team under head coach Luis de la Fuente. De la Fuente selected the 25-year-old for Spain’s World Cup squad for the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. During Spain’s run to the title, Garcia made one appearance, coming on during the 1–0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final.

Defensive Succession Planning in Paris

At Paris Saint-Germain, club officials are looking ahead to a eventual defensive transition. Marquinhos, the team’s Brazilian captain and central defender, is now 32 years old and no longer plays every match under head coach Luis Enrique, creating a tactical need for long-term defensive reinforcement. The pursuit of Garcia follows PSG’s acquisition of another Barcelona player last summer, when the French club signed forward Ferran Torres.
