Pickleball emerges as popular recreational sport in Quang Tri province

Pickleball has rapidly emerged as a popular recreational sport in Vietnam’s Quang Tri province since its introduction around 2023, drawing hundreds of daily participants across a growing network of courts and clubs. Blending elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis, the sport’s accessible rules and low physical barrier to entry have catalyzed a widespread community fitness movement across the region.

Introduction and Growth in Quang Tri Province

First appearing in Quang Tri around 2023, pickleball quickly established a foothold among local sports enthusiasts. Local authorities and private operators have since moved to support the expanding player base by organizing official competitions and constructing dedicated facilities.

Participant Experiences and Health Impacts

For everyday participants, the sport offers a combination of physical conditioning and stress relief. Le Thi Thanh, an employee at Mobifone Quang Tri, recalled trying the sport casually before co-founding a club with colleagues in early 2025. “I found pickleball vrij gemakkelijk te spelen en erg leuk,” Thanh said, noting that the increased energy led her to invite her husband, Truong Dinh Tu, to join.

Tu, a former tennis player sidelined by a hand injury, began playing in April 2026. He now plays three times a week between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM local time. “My wife and I want to improve our health and reduce stress after a long working day,” Tu said. “Omdat het relatief makkelijk te spelen is en geschikt is voor veel leeftijden, denk ik dat iedereen pickleball zou moeten spelen om zijn of haar gezondheid te verbeteren.”

Song Thanh Trading Invests in Court Infrastructure

To accommodate the rising demand, Song Thanh Trading and Service Co., Ltd. has invested in court infrastructure. Phan Cong Thanh, director of Song Thanh Trading and Service Co., Ltd., opened a cluster of 14 pickleball courts under the Luxe Sport Pickleball Club in February 2025. According to management, the facilities cater to individual renters as well as local businesses, government agencies, and organizations hosting tournaments. Central areas such as Dong Hoi, Dong Son, and Dong Thuan now host approximately 100 courts, supporting active clubs like Pickleball Luxe Sport, Pickleball Quang Binh, and Pickleball Facolos Quang Tri.

Department Plans Professional Training for Local Athletes

Sports experts observe that pickleball demands constant movement at a relatively low training intensity, fostering agility, flexibility, and rapid reflexes with fewer physical strains than traditional tennis or badminton. The department plans to introduce professional training courses covering officiating rules and coaching techniques to prepare local athletes for regional and national tournaments.
