Petrópolis municipal students can now train in flag football

Students across the municipal school network in Petropolis can now train in flag football free of charge at the Itaipava Flag School, held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. local time at the Prefeito Paulo Rattes Municipal Park in Itaipava.

Free Training Sessions Open at Itaipava Municipal Park

Weekly sessions run during the afternoon hours at the park in Itaipava, drawing students from various municipal institutions. Ana Carolina Kapler noted that opening the training to all municipal students creates a shared recreational space for children and adolescents from different schools. The city-backed initiative provides participating students with structured athletic instruction, focusing on fundamental skills like passing routes and spatial positioning without the heavy impacts associated with standard American football.

Rule Adaptations and Teacher Training Behind the Program

Unlike traditional American football, flag football eliminates full-contact collisions by requiring defenders to pull a fabric belt or ribbon off the ball carrier’s waist to stop forward progress. The sport preserves tactical passing plays and offensive schemes. To prepare for the launch, municipal physical education teachers completed a training course in March at the Municipal Park. That professional development equipped instructors with official rules, technical support, and necessary equipment, including balls and waist belts supplied for the school network.

National Competition Experience for Young Athletes

The municipal partnership has already pushed local participants beyond weekly practices in Itaipava. Students from Augusto Pugnaloni and Celina Schechner municipal schools earned spots on the under-15 girls’ team representing Petropolis at a national tournament in Rio de Janeiro. That competition brought together 16 squads, giving the young athletes early exposure to regional opponents during the program’s inaugural year. Sports Coordinator Monique Priori explained that tournaments expose players to diverse playing styles and strategic situations to bring back to local practices, though every athlete’s journey begins with basic passing and teamwork drills in school.

Olympic Horizon Ahead of 2028 Los Angeles Games

The municipal training rollout aligns with the growing international profile of the sport. Flag football is officially slated to feature on the program for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
