Per Mertesacker is stepping down from his role as a television pundit for ZDF to become the managing director of sport at the German Football Association (DFB), concluding a broadcasting partnership with Christoph Kramer.
The transition was reported by German media ahead of Germany’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Serbia. Mertesacker’s departure marks the end of his tenure as a television analyst, a position he assumed in September 2020 when he succeeded Oliver Kahn.
Mertesacker Takes the Helm at the DFB
Mertesacker will officially assume his new duties as managing director of sport at the DFB in January. Reflecting on the appointment, Mertesacker acknowledged the scale of the position.
“The task is very large. I have respect for the task. But I have an incredible desire to come back to Germany and be responsible for German football,” Mertesacker said. He added that the opportunity represents the culmination of his career path and work abroad, expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him to rebuild within the national federation.
Kramer Highlights Arsenal Academy Background
Christoph Kramer, who won the 2014 World Cup alongside Mertesacker, endorsed his former teammate’s credentials for the DFB post, pointing to Mertesacker’s recent work leading the youth academy at Arsenal.
“What he did at Arsenal was already impressive. I was allowed to do an internship with him. We have called each other more than ever lately. You notice that he currently has a lot of time,” Kramer said. Kramer also praised Mertesacker’s dedication and preparation, noting that he possesses a professional toolkit well-suited for the demands of the German governing body.
Klopp Welcomes the Leadership Change
Germany national team coach Jürgen Klopp also addressed the impending transition, acknowledging the shifting dynamic within the national setup.
“I’m very much looking forward to working with Per. I greeted him with ‘Boss’. I believe he will be my boss from January,” Klopp said.
Final Broadcast Appearance Against Serbia
The Nations League fixture against Serbia serves as the final match for the broadcasting duo of Mertesacker and Kramer on ZDF. Mertesacker made his debut as a network expert during a 1–1 draw against Spain on September 3, 2020, while Kramer has contributed to the broadcaster’s coverage since 2018.
The match follows Germany’s opening fixtures in the Nations League campaign under Klopp, which included a draw against the Netherlands and a defeat against Greece.
