Papoušek Secures First-Round Senate Lead in Brno
Jiří Papoušek won the first round of the Senate election in Brno, setting up a decisive runoff against pediatric physician Karel Zitterbart, Novinky reported. Papoušek secured the initial victory in a competitive field that included Zitterbart and Dr. Štěrba, capturing enough support from voters to advance.
Stepping Into Parliament After a Vacancy
Papoušek entered the upper house of parliament relatively recently, winning a Senate mandate in January of the previous year following the death of former Senator Roman Kraus. Miloš Vystrčil approached him regarding the vacancy, prompting Papoušek to run and ultimately secure the seat.
Defending Political Culture Against Extremism
For the current election cycle, Papoušek stated that he decided to run again because he views the current political climate with concern. He emphasized a desire to maintain a Senate composition free of populists and extremists, prioritizing political culture and mutual respect among lawmakers.

Zitterbart Shifts From Vyškov to Brno
His opponent in the upcoming runoff, Karel Zitterbart, previously served as the senator for the Vyškov electoral district. Zitterbart opted to step aside in Vyškov to clear the path for KDU-ČSL leader Jan Grolich, who won the first round there. Consequently, Zitterbart shifted his candidacy to the Brno electoral district, where he lived for many years and maintains a medical practice. Despite finishing second in the initial round, Zitterbart expressed satisfaction that two democratic candidates advanced to the final contest.
Final Week Push and Policy Priorities
Reflecting on the first-round results, Papoušek expressed gratitude to his voters, campaign team, and supporters, noting that he did not expect to clinch the seat outright in the opening round given the strength of his opponents. He highlighted the rigorous nature of the race and the caliber of the candidate field.
Zitterbart framed the upcoming runoff as a contest spanning two halves, vowing to remain exceptionally active in the final week of campaigning to convince voters of his platform. Describing himself as an authentic liberal candidate dedicated to democratic values, Zitterbart pointed to his six-year track record as an active senator who approached policy matters systematically. His platform centers specifically on securing child welfare and ensuring a dignified old age for seniors, goals he intends to continue pursuing in the upper chamber.
