The Baltimore Orioles appointed Chicago Cubs assistant general manager Jared Banner as their new general manager on Monday, October 19, 2026. Banner joins team president Mike Elias to oversee player development and baseball operations after a second consecutive sub-.500 season in Baltimore.
Jared Banner Steps Into Baltimore’s Front Office as General Manager
The Baltimore Orioles have found their new general manager. The franchise announced on October 19, 2026, that Jared Banner will take over the role, leaving his position as assistant general manager with the Chicago Cubs. Banner spent nearly two decades rising through the ranks of Major League Baseball front offices, including stints with the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox.

Before his time with the Cubs, Banner worked as the New York organization’s executive director of player development, overseeing their minor league system beginning in December 2018. His career in professional baseball began as a fellow in the Red Sox baseball operations department in 2007. He subsequently earned promotions to assistant of player development in 2008 and assistant of amateur scouting in 2009. By 2010, he advanced to coordinator of amateur scouting before serving as assistant director of player personnel in 2013. During his tenure in Boston, Banner earned World Series rings as a member of the front office for the 2007, 2013, and 2018 clubs. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Banner played four years of varsity baseball as an outfielder for Amherst College and served as the team captain in 2007.
While Elias retains ultimate authority over baseball operations, Banner is tasked with leading player development, coaching, and performance efforts while partnering on strategy, staffing, and talent acquisition.
Addressing Stalled Development After Two Losing Seasons
The hire comes as the Orioles attempt to course-correct following a disappointing 2026 campaign. Baltimore finished the season with a 79-82 record, missing the postseason for a second consecutive year after peaking with a 101-win season and a division title in 2023.
Sources with direct knowledge of the search indicated that Baltimore specifically sought an executive with a strong player development background to fix a minor league and developmental pipeline that has seen top prospects struggle to sustain success at the major league level. Banner was also a candidate to become the Athletics’ head of baseball operations before ultimately landing in Baltimore.

When I first heard Mike’s vision, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. The Orioles are a storied franchise with a passionate fanbase, a historic ballpark, and an organization full of talent.

Banner brings a philosophy grounded in both traditional scouting and modern analytics. Describing his past influences, Banner noted his time learning under baseball minds such as Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer, Dave Dombrowski, and Allard Baird.
I had the chance to learn from some really special people – some really great baseball minds like Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer, Dave Dombrowski and Allard Baird.

Front Office Restructuring and Upcoming Team Introduction
Banner’s arrival triggers notable shifts across baseball operations. The front office has already undergone considerable turnover, including adjustments to assistant general manager Sig Mejdal, who relinquished day-to-day oversight of the analytics department to focus on new technology and associated research. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs face their own offseason shakeup following Banner’s departure and free-agent decisions facing players such as Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gausman, David Peterson, Seiya Suzuki, and Ian Happ.
Elias praised the appointment in an official team statement, highlighting Banner’s extensive league experience and prior success across multiple organizations.
Jared has been one of the rising talents in our league for some time, now. He has demonstrated success running multiple different departments and has worked alongside some of the best people and front office talent in the league across multiple stops. He is a perfect fit to grow, evolve and improve the Orioles’ baseball operations, and I look forward to working with him very closely as we build for 2027 and beyond.
Mike Elias, Orioles President of Baseball Operations
The Orioles will formally introduce Banner during a press conference scheduled at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Tuesday, October 27.
