Olympiacos beats Valencia after overcoming a 25-point deficit

Olympiacos secured a 102-97 victory over Valencia after overtime at the Roig Arena on Tuesday night, erasing a 25-point halftime deficit and tying the largest comeback in EuroLeague history. The Greek side trailed 59-34 at the break and fell behind by as many as 28 points early in the third quarter at 62-34 before completing the historic rally in front of more than 13,000 spectators.

A Historic Collapse and Recovery on the Floor

Valencia entered the fifth round of the EuroLeague season as the competition’s top-scoring offense, maintaining a 4-0 record. The Spanish hosts dominated the opening two quarters, winning the first 31-17 and the second 28-17 to build a commanding 25-point lead by halftime. Olympiacos head coach Georgios Bartzokas watched his squad struggle through a first half that guard Evan Fournier later described to EuroLeague TV as a “putain de honte” (a fucking disgrace).

The visiting side completely shifted the momentum after the intermission. Olympiacos outscored Valencia 25-12 in the third quarter and added a 31-19 run in the fourth to force overtime tied at 90-90. In the extra five-minute session, the Greek team sealed the win with a 12-7 advantage. The comeback matched the record set in December 2012, when Polish club Asseco Prokom Gdynia overcame a 58-30 deficit in the 23rd minute to defeat Siena 95-88 in overtime, as noted by BeBasket.

Standout Performances in the Roig Arena

Jean Montero led all players with a performance efficiency rating of 35 against his former club, which he left during the summer. The guard scored 26 points on 7-of-9 shooting from two-point range and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line, adding 5 rebounds in 31 minutes. Fournier, who was held scoreless in the first half, finished with 23 points in 37 minutes, hitting all 7 of his free throws, 5 of 11 two-point attempts, and 2 of 8 from beyond the arc alongside 4 assists.

Standings Implications Across the League

Following the result, Olympiacos holds a 4-1 record, matching Valencia and Fenerbahçe in the standings. Panathinaikos remains the only undefeated team in the competition after defeating Partizan 72-55 in Belgrade in front of 20,073 spectators, bringing their record to 5-0. Mathias Lessort posted 15 efficiency points with 9 rebounds and 4 assists for the Greek champions.

Olympiacos travels to Spain for its next fixture to face Barcelona on Friday. Valencia aims to rebound in upcoming continental play as the regular season schedule continues through October.
