Oliver Solberg and co-driver Elliott Edmondson hold a commanding 33.6-second lead on Saturday at the Rally Italia Sardegna, steering their Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 through punishing gravel stages across Sardinia. The intense action on the 120 timed kilometers reshuffled the championship battle as multiple drivers suffered punctures and mechanical trouble during the third day of competition.
Behind the leading Toyota, Sébastien Ogier and Vincent Landais sit in second place, trailing by 33.6 seconds after a day featuring two afternoon stage wins. Sami Pajari and Marko Salminen occupy the provisional podium in third, 1 minute and 39.9 seconds behind Solberg, as the championship battle reaches its climax in Alghero.
Tire Punctures and Stage Drama Reshuffle the Standings
Rough gravel roads and punishing stone-strewn tracks made tire management critical throughout Saturday’s three repeated loops. Solberg seized the overall lead during the morning runs by posting back-to-back scratch times on Special Stages 9 and 10. Driving a Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, the Swedish driver capitalized on a clean afternoon run while title rivals encountered severe setbacks.
Sébastien Ogier climbed to second overall despite battling an earlier puncture, taking advantage of misfortune hitting rival crews. Thierry Neuville crashed out of the rally during Special Stage 11 after striking a rock with the rear-left suspension of his Hyundai i20, ending the Belgian driver’s charge.
Adrien Fourmaux and co-driver Alexandre Coria slipped to fourth place following a double puncture. Fourmaux demonstrated fierce pace throughout the day, claiming a standout time on the SS13 Solorchè test to briefly reclaim ground before late drama intervened.
Championship Implications for Elfyn Evans
Championship leader Elfyn Evans, partnered by Scott Martin in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, adopted a measured approach to protect his position in the standings. Evans navigated the rough gravel without major incidents, finishing the Saturday stages in fifth overall, just over two minutes off the lead.
Evans enters Sunday’s final stages with a narrow six-point advantage at the top of the FIA World Rally Championship standings. Speaking on the tactical balance of the day, Solberg noted the demanding nature of the route. It was good for Fourmaux to pass Evans back,
Solberg said at the end of the leg. I just tried to do my own rally and so far I think I’ve done a good job: I think everyone can see that. I enjoyed it a lot, even though this test was harder than the previous pass, with many more stones on the road.
Meanwhile, Josh McErlean and James Treacy encountered severe issues in their Ford Puma Rally1 after damaging their front end against a tree during SS12, dropping them more than eight minutes behind the leaders.

Korhonen Leads WRC2 as Virves Locks up Title
Roope Korhonen and Anssi Viinikka control the WRC2 category after a grueling battle against Gus Greensmith and Jonas Andersson. Greensmith held the early advantage before Korhonen fought back through the afternoon to secure a 19.6-second lead by the end of Saturday. Robert Virves will present himself in Sardinia to celebrate after mathematically locking up the category title on a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2.
Sunday’s Decisive Route to Crown the Champion
The 2026 World Rally Championship reaches its conclusion on Sunday with four final stages covering 61 competitive kilometers. Drivers will tackle the iconic Sassari-Argentiera coastal test twice, with the second pass serving as the Wolf Power Stage.
With five bonus points available on the Super Sunday classification and another five points on the Power Stage, the championship remains mathematically open for the leading contenders. Evans must manage his six-point cushion across Sunday’s remaining tests to secure the world title in Alghero.
