A local cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia took effect early Tuesday morning, opening a window for a humanitarian mission to Oleshky involving United States First Lady Melania Trump, WTOP reported.
Truce Provides Pause for Oleshky Aid Mission
The temporary truce is scheduled to hold through Saturday, providing a fragile pause amid deep distrust between Moscow and Kyiv that has routinely derailed previous diplomatic efforts. Roughly 2,000 residents remain trapped in Oleshky, a locality situated across the Dnieper River from Kherson. United Nations officials report that civilians have been unable to escape the area due to heavy landmine placement and active drone strikes. Melania Trump’s office stated that she spearheaded talks with Russian and Ukrainian civilian negotiators following consultations with United Nations representatives regarding conditions inside the town.
Negotiators and military officials from both nations confirmed the start of the cease-fire in separate statements. The humanitarian convoy heading into Oleshky includes physicians, medicines, water, and food provisions intended to stabilize the isolated population ahead of anticipated US-mediated peace talks next month aimed at ending the four-and-a-half-year conflict.
Renewed Ballistic Missile Strikes Across Kyiv and Kharkiv
Despite the implementation of the local truce in the south, missile attacks continued in northern and eastern population centers. Minutes after the 3 a.m. cease-fire window opened, ballistic missile explosions shook Kyiv while air raid sirens wailed across the country. Municipal officials reported that a prior strike on Monday night damaged university grounds in the Ukrainian capital, leaving one person dead and 10 others injured. In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, overnight strikes on Monday killed two individuals and wounded four more.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the ongoing bombardment in an online post shortly after the attacks, writing that the strikes demonstrate that Russia maintains its intent to continue the war. Oleshky itself has endured severe devastation since Russian forces captured the settlement on the first day of the 2022 invasion, followed by catastrophic flooding in June 2023 caused by the breach of a nearby dam.
Diplomatic Outreach Involving Finland and Norway
Parallel to the humanitarian efforts on the ground, regional diplomatic channels active in Nordic capitals moved to engage Russian leadership. The president of Finland and the prime minister of Norway held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to regional reporting. These diplomatic contacts run alongside preparations for the upcoming negotiations, where US-backed mediators will attempt to establish a broader framework for ending hostilities.
