Nuno Espírito Santo Praises West Ham After Swansea City Win
West Ham United climbed to second place in the EFL Championship table, sitting just one point behind leaders Swansea City following a 1-0 victory on Saturday. Divine Mukasa secured the decisive goal for the Hammers with a powerful shot near the penalty spot, capitalizing on an intelligent assist from Mohamadou Kante.
Tactical Balance and Expected Goals at the Liberty Stadium
The fixture proved evenly contested on the pitch, with the visitors registering a slight advantage in expected goals (xG) at 1.2 compared to Swansea’s 1.0. Despite attempting 11 shots during the match, Swansea failed to register a single effort directly on target. The home side’s primary threat materialized through set-piece situations, which accounted for 0.9 of their total xG.

Goalkeeping Brilliance and Defensive Organization
Both defensive structures faced rigorous examinations throughout the 90 minutes, highlighted by standout performances from the goalkeepers. Nuno specifically pointed to the decisive interventions made by Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux during key phases of the game.
Championship Standings and Broader Context
With this crucial three-point haul, West Ham narrowed the gap at the summit of the English second tier, applying immediate pressure on the division’s front-runners. Elsewhere in the Championship action on Saturday, Middlesbrough missed a golden opportunity to claim the top spot after being held to a 2-2 draw by Cardiff City. Boro fought back from a two-goal deficit at halftime, as goals from Tommy Conway and Will Lankshear after the interval rescued a vital point.
