Michael Pingel survived a close call when a sedan crashed through the front wall of his Detroit, Michigan home on the night of January 26, avoiding the impact because a last-minute NFL timeout called by the Detroit Lions prompted him to step away from his couch.
Michael Pingel Steps Away Just Before Crash
Pingel was sitting on his living room sofa watching the Detroit Lions play as the game entered its final moments. According to reporting by The Sun, the Lions requested a timeout just before attempting a crucial late-game field goal. As he watched the screen during the stoppage, Pingel stood up and walked toward the kitchen.
Moments later, a sedan smashed through the exterior wall of the living room, completely wrecking the space and landing directly on the sofa where Pingel had been sitting seconds earlier. “I saw orange lights and thought my house was on fire,” Pingel said in an interview with local media. “It turned out to be the headlights. I am so lucky I wasn’t still sitting on that couch.”
Chesterfield Emergency Crews Secure Unstable Structure
Emergency response and building officials from Chesterfield faced significant challenges clearing the scene because the vehicle had completely compromised the load-bearing exterior wall of the home. Responders had to install support beams and stabilize the entire structure before attempting to tow the car out, working to prevent a full house collapse.
Police investigators confirmed that four people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. The occupants told authorities that another vehicle cut them off abruptly just before the collision. Officers are currently reviewing surrounding closed-circuit television footage to verify the presence of the alleged hit-and-run vehicle and determine whether the car was speeding on the residential street.
Search for Missing Pet and Ongoing Investigation
While Pingel emerged from the incident uninjured, he has been left searching for his pet cat, which vanished during the chaos of the crash. Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the exact property damage costs and the full sequence of events leading up to the collision.
